Following are some brief introduction for some of bamboo fences

Rolled Bamboo Fencing are made of 1.0-5.0mm bamboo poles which are strung together with threading galvanized wire going through the bamboo pole or woven with black nylon coated galvanized wire. These products can be used to partition gardens or border walkways, or extends from the house or a wall as a decorative screen, or to define space. Linked together and rolled up for easy shipping and delivery. Rolled bamboo fencing can be installed onto wood posts, or over pre-existing fences, including chain link.

Bamboo Slat Fence utilizes 1/2 round or other shape bamboo slats instead of bamboo poles. It also usually comes in rolled up sections. The big difference between pole fence and slat fencing is weather resistance. You'll want to treat your slat fencing with a weather sealer to prevent it from experiencing rotting and other weather damage.

Bamboo Fencing X-tras
While bamboo fencing is beautiful in and of itself, many homeowners also choose to dress it up some to make it look more permanent, and to help boost its structural integrity. Building a fir wood frame, including posts, crossbars, and top rails, is an excellent way to support, and solidify your bamboo fencing, making it a more permanent fence solution. Of course, while wood frames provide a solid base for installation, it's not necessary.

Bamboo Twig Fence is made of small bamboo twigs interwoven and held together with galvanized steel wire. It resembles a thatch fence, is a little more open than other bamboo fencing, and won't last quite as long. Still, if you're searching for a tropical feel for your fencing needs, you find a better product than bamboo twig fence.

Bamboo border edging--low rolled fences have two types of regular and irregular height for straight or curved edges, they are usually used as pedestrian control fencing, pathway divider, where foot traffic is directed away from fragile plants and flower. Or as raised flower beds to enclose flower pots and plants, Poles are coated with lacquer to prolong life lasting up to 10-15 years in outdoors. It’s really an attractive edging for borders, beds, paths and drives.

bamboo fence installation

Bamboo fence  is a good choice when you want to create privacy or add an exotic touch to your landscape. Bamboo fences are lightweight, durable, resistant to water, low maintenance, and relatively inexpensive.

ITEMS NEEDED

Power saw               Harmer               Level

Post hole digger    Power drill         Tap measure

There are several styles of bamboo fences to choose from. The most common styles are constructed of 1” diameter bamboo poles or 1/2” diameter bamboo canes. The pieces of bamboo are arranged vertically side by side and held together with heavy-duty galvanized wire, which does not rust. Other popular designs include woven bamboo, which consists of smaller canes tied together in bundles, and split bamboo (the outer surface of the bamboo cane) made of 1/2 “ thick slats tied together with wire. Woven and split bamboo fences last about 10 years, while fences constructed of bamboo poles or canes have a lifespan of approximately 20 years. Bamboo, because it is a live plant, is dried, cleaned and fumigated before being used in fence construction.

Bamboo fence comes in rolls or in panels. Panels are usually 6 or 8-feet wide, whereas the length of a roll varies depending on manufacturer. Fence heights also vary, but are typically 3, 4, 6, or 8 feet high. When installing a bamboo fence, always leave several inches of clearance under the fence to prevent contact with moisture in the ground, which will cause the bamboo to decompose and rot. If the height of the fence needs to be adjusted, use a bamboo saw to make a clean cut and prevent jagged edges. To cut rolls to a specific length, use sharp wire cutters to cut the wires holding the bamboo fence together.

Installing a roll of bamboo fence over an existing chain link fence is easier than using panels. Unroll the fence and attach it to the top, bottom, and then middle of the first post with 12-inch length pieces of heavy-duty galvanized wire. Use a pair of pliers to pull the wire through to the other side and twist the wires to secure the fence. Use 10-inch lengths of galvanized wire to attach the bamboo fence to the top and bottom horizontal stringers of the chain link fence every 4 to 6 feet. Adjust the length of the galvanized wire as needed, depending on the dimensions of the posts and stringers.

When the end of the roll is reached, attach the new roll using galvanized wire at intervals of at least 12 inches. Continue fastening the bamboo fencing to the chain link fence until you reach the last post, adjusting the vertical alignment as needed. Wrap the bamboo fence around the corner of the last post and fasten it securely to the pos with galvanized wire. To install a woven or split bamboo fence roll over a board fence, there is an option of using a staple gun to staple the bamboo fence to the board fence instead of attaching it with wire. Use stainless steel staples to prevent rusting.

When installing bamboo fence panels or a rolled bamboo fence as a stand-alone fence, it is necessary to construct a framework of vertical posts and horizontal stringers. Posts should be 4” x 4” in size and made of cedar/carbonized/pressure treated wood to prevent rotting where they are in contact with the ground. Space the posts to accommodate the width of the panel or every 6 feet on center if using a fence roll. Install the posts in the ground in accordance with local building standards.

Panels generally have horizontal stringers already attached to the panel; however, if they do not, or you are using a fence roll, use cedar / carbonized / pressure treated wood, or large bamboo poles for the stringers. If bamboo poles are used, drill holes in the bamboo to accommodate the galvanized wire prior to installation. For a 6-foot high fence, three evenly spaced horizontal stringers (2”x4” wood planks or bamboo poles) should be nailed (wood planks) or attached with wire (bamboo poles) to the top, bottom and middle of the post. Attach the bamboo fence to the frame using galvanized wire as described above for chain link fences. Each post id shaped according to its use. Before installing, lay down the post on the floor. Each post is grooved & pinned to receive the panel. End post have one groove, Line post have two grooves opposite to each other, Corner post have two grooves 90o from each other, Gate posts could have one groove, when used without any connecting panels, or two grooves if used in line. Flanges are used for mounting the post. For hard surface a flat flange is provided. For soil installation the flange has 2 ft extension which goes in cement. Flanges are coated beige to match bamboo. Each bamboo post has a steel insert 20” up from the bottom of the post for added strength. Pins stick out of the groove to match the panel.3) Connect panel to post by matching the holes in the section with the pins on the post, drill pilot hole with drill bit (do not use stainless steel screws without the pilot hole, bamboo will split). Insert the #10 X 3 1/2” stainless steel flat head screw.

FINISH

Each component has been factory coated with 3 coats of outdoor varnish with UV protection. If you want to retain the original shine a coat of varnish with UV protection should be applied after installation and once a year thereafter. If not coated the bamboo will turn into beautiful silver gray color pleasant and natural to eyes. If used indoor coat when desired.

bamboo poles

Work on bamboo poles

Some stuff you might want to know:

In General, there are two main differences. The "solid" and hollow bamboo. The "solid" is really thick walled bamboo, (not exactly solid!), mostly used for construction and fabrication of furniture. Solid bamboo can be nailed and generally do not split. (the split, if it occurs, happens on the inside of the bamboo and does not generally show on the outside). The nodes are very prominent and this bamboo is seldom straight. This bamboo is not prone to splitting. In many countries of the far east, solid bamboo is used for construction of houses, flooring, roofing etc.... The Hollow bamboo is the most common recognizable bamboo product. (the kind you usually find in a Chinese restaurant) . It straight and the nodes are generally not prominent but extremely prone to splitting over time. (they make excellent curtain rods)

Chemical Treatment issue—natural green or bleaching blonde and weathered

Cutting, Heat straightening or bending, Get poles boiled in boric acid or Hydrogen Dioxide (Hydrogen Peroxide) or calcined soda solution for degreasing ,bleaching, anti erosion (corrosion), anti-insect, and anti-mildew, Kiln or airing dried to get poles cured, Fumigation and inspection by china Commodities Inspection and Quarantine bureau. another option—no chemical treatment, just air drying and fumigation

Cracking issue—we ensure no cracking happened when we delivery stuff to you destination port

Bamboo is a moisture loving plant. Acclimatize the bamboo slowly to your surrounding temp, this will help reduce splitting and cracking, remember your UPS truck can get up to 140F in the summer and down under freezing in the winters. (They are like the energizer bunny....keep on trucking!) Whenever there is a change in temp or moisture, splits are prone to occur. We cannot fix mother nature! pepole were used to make poles' moisture rank  6-13% to adapt different regions and environment climate as per your mentioned. please note that when you would build a structure, you’d better to get them cured for at least one week prior to the products installation to make poles adapt local climate.

Diameter Issues.

Bamboo is the plant, for this reason, the lower part of the bamboo is always thicker than the top. It has always been surprising to us how our competitors can give an exact diameter for their bamboo poles considering that such a pole cannot grow naturally........Bamboo is not quite like a wood dowel! You can only purchase full bamboo poles. We ship all remnants poles to you if required. (please ask specifically for it).Hollow bamboo have excellent diameter control. This means the two end of the bamboo poles almost have the same diameter or are within 1/2-1". These poles are reduced nodes and generally does not affect the diameter and is usually very straight.
Please expect that the bamboo diameter will be inconsistent. There is nothing uniform about bamboo, every piece is different!, plan to work with an inexact product. normally, we measured at 2-3cm from the bottom of the cane.

Colored bamboo Poles

Colored Bamboo is normal bamboo that is either dyed or stained. It very simple, use a normal bamboo like Tonkin or Moso. Lightly sand the bamboo and stain or paint the bamboo. That's it! Recommend high gloss if using paint. There is a variety of bamboo that is actually ash color, we do not recommend this genus, its not a robust.
Green bamboo: we do not recommend this type of poles. It looks more "jungle" but it does not last long. The chlorophyll (the green) in the bamboo will eventually disappear and turn yellow when the bamboo is exposed to the sun or dries out. That's why you get yellow bamboo. We have also noted large amount of bugs and pests in greener bamboo. Recommend buying yellow bamboo, sanding and staining the bamboo green for a longer lasting product.

Mottled bamboo is slightly more complicated. The yellow bamboo is burnt to form the mottled look. The mottled bamboo (tortoise, tiger, green speckled...different names) can now be sanded and varnish for a glossier look. It can also be dyed for a green mottled look

Black bamboo is natural color, not painting black laquer.

Varnish.

Varnish your bamboo poles for display uses is a good thing. It make the pole look glossier and protects the bamboo. However varnish does not easily adhere the tough outer coating of bamboo. You must sand down the outside bamboo skin and THEN varnish the bamboo pole to get a long-lasting coat.  Note for outdoor Bamboo usage.
we use water seal and coat the inside of the bamboo or completely seal both ends of the bamboo. Water logged bamboo is the easiest way for bamboo to rot. Keep the bamboo poles off the ground, this will reduce the chance of water logged rotting and bug infestation. Proper sealant treatment will allow the bamboo to last indefinitely.

Bamboo facia.

Bamboo poles can be used to cover existing pillars or post. (We had one customer, cover his deck pillars with bamboo, the deck now looks like a huge tiki hut!) .
To do this you must split the bamboo poles. You will need at least an additional 1 1/2" additional in diameter to cover your pillars. For example: if your pillar is 3" diameter, you will need a least a 4 1/2" bamboo pole. (Why?, Remember you have to account for the bamboo wall thickness!). The split parts can be glued together with silicone, the top and bottom opening must also be sealed with silicone. Rolled Fencing also works as a great for this application.  We recommend a coat of varnish on the insides and outside of the split poles prior to installation.

Bamboo Headboard, Beds and canopies

One of our biggest requests. Relatively simple request.
Canopies is the easiest:
You will require several different diameter bamboo poles (4" and 2" work the best), Sisal rope. We will have the bamboo cut and predrilled with the holes to fit. You will need to assemble them and slot and glue the poles into place. Use the sisal rope to cover the attach points of the bamboo. The canopy will be secured to your bed by L or U brackets.
Headboard is even easier:
2" or 4" poles work the best. We will precut the poles to size, line them up, glue the poles to the wall! that it!. Laminated, quick grip glue works the best. This headboard can be made more sturdier when the poles are installed on plywood backing and then installed on the wall......
Bed: It’s our finished products

Bamboo molding or Wainscoating (chair molding)

Simple 1.7-1.9" Tonkin, 2-2.5" Moso or 2.75-3.1 Moso will work out fine. The bamboo will have to be split vertically into 1/2 rounds. Try to keep the lengths under 12ft (single run). Give the bamboo a coat of polyurethane varnish before installing.
Sand down wall until its smooth, remove any dust. Glue bamboo molding to wall with transparent liquid nails. (local home depot will have it). Bamboo Molding can be reinforced with screws, Pre drill and countersink. Do not over-tighten the screws as the bamboo will crack.  The screw hole can be covered with a thin slat or another half round if desired. Before installing the bamboo molding cut the 45 degree angle for the corners with a miter box.

Other Stuff from bamboo poles

DIY stuff:  Hand Rails, Bar rails, Wall and Ceiling panels, Wall/door Molding, Ladders, towel hangers, fences, dividers, picture frames and lots more.........
