Do you Tango in Atlanta? Do you Tango anywhere else? Chances are... not yet.
My name is Ilya and I love Argentine Tango. I love Tango dance, Tango music, Tango community. I teach Tango in Atlanta, GA. Here is how I made a transition from technical world into the world of Argentine Tango in Atlanta:
Many years ago I studied Engineering and then worked in a high-tech area for years. Then I decided to study Business Administration, and got to apply my second degree as well. All was well, yet something was missing. Even though I already took up ballroom dancing as a hobby...
I started taking dance classes in 1993. Not quite sure why, but I knew I wanted to move to music. Guess simply listening was nice but not enough :) I enjoyed learning to dance very much. I took it seriously and focused on a technique and movement. After 10 years of learning Ballroom - Smooth and Latin, with some Salsa and Swing, I decided to explore Argentine Tango.
Tango is a different dance, or to be exact, a family of dances. While everyone knows about Tango, there are two more dances in this family - Tango Vals (Waltz) and Milonga. Some folks who dance Ballroom also dance Tango, and the other way around is true as well. Of course, when I talk about Tango I do not mean American Tango or International Tango, which are Ballroom styles. I am talking about the original Tango, which was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina over 100 years ago. I will elaborate on differencies in future posts.
While I liked (and still like) all partner dances, it was Argentine Tango that made an impact on my life. After taking Tango Lessons for about 8-9 months I got to the point when I felt like focusing on this dance only, without other distractions. Slowly by surely Tango replaced Ballroom Dances and became "It".
I know I am not the only one to whom it happened, there are quite a few folks who share a similar path in their lives aas well as dance progression. Argentine Tango can be addictive (in the best sense of the word) if you are serious about it. Luckily we do not need to issue a warning about the addiction, as it is beneficial to our health, both mental and physical. This "addiction" keeps us in shape, helps stay young, enriches social lives, and teaches us a universal language that people anywhere in the world where there is Tango can understand without saying a word...
