One of the key mistakes I find in most Father of the Bride speeches is that the speaker forgets to
use the active voice. In the active voice the subject does
something, whereas in the passive voice something is done to the subject. The
active voice will force you to deliver the sentence with more emotion. As we've
already learned the core of a good speech is emotion.
Here is an example of the active
voice:
“My daughter and her friends
lobbed the water balloons from the roof top and howled as the drenched
businessmen looked up in confusion.”
This is an example of the passive
voice:
“The water
balloons were thrown from the roof top only to drench the businessmen.”
Notice how the
second sentence sounds weak. If you read
aloud the two sentences you will notice the superior power of the active voice.
It sounds more interesting and no matter who the speaker, it will be said with
more emotion.
A powerful Father of the Bride speech will use various techniques to illicit emotion in the audience. The active voice when telling an anecdote about your daughter is a key strategy.
You can see the active voice in a Sample Father of the Bride speech that will help reinforce this new technique.
