Have you ever found yourself fading in and out while someone is talking to you? And while you are doing that, you wonder what you are going to say next? It happens to most of us. We never tend to give a thought to what we want to achieve by communicating our ideas or thoughts. Sometimes we just feel the subliminal need to say things and not communicate. But isn't the idea of communicating to transfer information, thoughts and feelings to another person capable of understanding that very transfer. Yet, I am surprised by how we never think of that end goal -- Is what I am saying making sense to the other person?
When you find yourself talking to someone the next time, stop and ask yourself some questions mentally -- Would this person understand what I am saying if I said it differently? Will an example help him/her understand the context? Should I repeat what I just said? Should I stop and listen? Can I pause, breathe, and simplify what I am saying?
Bottom line, keep the goal of communication in mind - its not whether you understand what you are saying, its whether the other person does or not.
