Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects has won the commission for a 30,000 square meter library in the Municipality of Aarhus, Denmark.  According to the firm, their design reassesses traditional concepts of library design, calling it "a hub of social interaction, incorporating interior and exterior recreational spaces for studying, socializing, and relaxing."  The building can also host multi-media and cultural events.

The library is part of a plan to rehabilitate the old cargo docks and connect them to the city center.  Its hexagonal shape will feature a glass facade that will allow ample natural light while simultaneously allowing passersby to see the interior, drawing them in.

SHL Architects is a leader in library design, with projects that include Aberdeen University Library and the Library Learning Centre in Sheffield.
