China has been the powerhouse of growth in the global polyurethanes sector over recent years, and while the current worldwide economic crisis has seen demand drop everywhere, China remains the region with the best prospects for long-term growth in the future. Some recent data on the polyurethanes sector in China shows why so many raw materials suppliers in the PU sector have invested in world-scale production plants in the country.

In 2007, China overtook the US as the largest single polyurethane producer, according to market research group IAL Consultants Ltd, which gave China’s 2007 production as 4.28 million tonnes (2.62 million tonnes in 2004), NAFTA’s as 3.25 million tonnes (3.59 million tonnes in 2004). Polyurethane production in Europe, the Middle East and Africa during the year was 5.32 million tonnes (4.23 million tonnes in 2004). And China seems likely to be the place where the resurgence starts, since local consumption of PU materials and products has been expanding hugely. This growth has been partly fuelled by China’s success in feeding the US’s previously insatiable demands for consumer goods. But another major influence has been the 1.3 billion-strong population’s rising prosperity, which has allowed them to purchase more domestic goods, including refrigerators, which need rigid polyurethane foam, and soft furnishings, a major outlet for flexible foam.
