Have you ever wondered what the difference between a leader and a manager really is? Most folks believe that just because you get promoted to a management position, you must have leadership qualities.  Someone must have seen something within you that made them promote you.  Well believe it or not, the two are not always synonomous.

We have all worked for our share of really bad managers.  Managers who abused authority and ruled with an iron fist.  Watching every move you made and reporting every indiscretion.  These folks have never really taken on the mantel of leadership, but rather were promoted because of longevity or need.

Now a leader on the other hand makes you feel like your job, however mundane is worth doing.  They look for ways to build up their team and inspire a greater sense of loyalty, not just to the organization, but to them personally.  We all want to do a better job for a leader.

Leaders are not afraid to give up the spot light, they are not afraid to give others credit for work well done.  They understand the principles of giving and receiving.  They get better work from their subordinates, because they aren't afraid to share the spotlight.

These are just a few of the qualities that leaders possess.  Take some time to assess your leadership skills and see if you measure up to some of the great leaders you have known.  Are you prepared to become a leader, do you have what it takes?
