Although CFLs were designed as a one-to-one replacement for incandescent bulbs in terms of light output, in terms of light quality CFLs underperform. Fixture designers should begin to rethink and retool. Fixtures designed specifically for CFL, rather than incandescent, will get us thinking about CFLs in a different way. For starters, we can look to some of the solutions found on standard T8 and T5 fluorescent fixtures in offices. One trick of the trade is to substantially increase the light quality and improve color by bouncing the light off of a high quality reflector. Miro, for example, is a metal reflector now common in high-end office fixtures. The "specularity" of the material points light where it's most attractive and most effective.
