At the magazine, the choice to put Google at the top of our "most
innovative companies" list was almost a fait accompli. No one seriously
argued for any other player to head the list. Check out our various
Google insights at http://www.fastcompany.com/fast50_08/index.html  Anyone want to make an argument for another No. 1 for 2007? Or does consensus reign everywhere?

I think many may argue that the iPhone should give Apple the number one spot. Personally, I think Apple's #2 spot may be a bit high...

Apple has had a big bump in R&D recently. They have lots of interesting patent filings in the multi-touch arena. The mouse was a revolution in human computer interface--and I think the next revolution will be with our fingers. Apple is patenting multi-touch gestures, dictionaries, surfaces (that can vibrate or create bumps for a virtual keyboard). Apple is getting us used to multitouch by first putting into the phone and now incorporating it into the new laptops touchpad. So the #2 spot may be justified.
Although everyone talks about the iPhone, Apple is innovating on a whole variety of products. Their new Aperture 2.0 has finally allowed me to go through my 50,000+ photo library with amazing speed and ease. Their pro Application for video and audio are pretty amazing and get more sophisticated each year. The updated iTV is a much more interesting product. I'm even compelled to drop cable now that you I get free HD content or rent movies in HD.

They do have a terrific capacity for creating lustworthy products. The Air is just so . . . appealing. It has its shortcomings--tradeoffs, really--but when our art director brought into the office his brand-new one, everyone wanted to look at it, touch it, play with it.
