Monitors are the most used computer output devices. Computer Monitors display feedback by showing graphic images and text as you work or perform tasks. Monitors apply different technologies. The oldest is the Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) technology. Most CRT monitors require analogue (continuous electrical) signal forms and therefore typically require analogue (VGA) connection.
The need to convert computer digital signals to analogue forms for display through monitors necessitates the use of video adapters and VGA cables. Liquid Crystal display (LCD) technology or flat screen display monitors use digital signals. LCD monitors are generally preferred due to their slimmer designs and lower energy consumptions.
Digital monitors (LCDs) are based on Digital Video Interface (DVI) connection that does not require conversion of data from digital to analogue formats. DVI specification is based on Silicon Image’s Transition Minimized Differential Signaling (TMDS), which provides high-speed digital interfacing.
