Is Apple's App store just a good way to make additional revenue or has Apple taken a page from Google here?

When you think about it with every downloaded app from the store, free or not, Apple has just gotten another glimpse of what you are using your iphone and ipod touch for.  

Now the big question now is will Steve use that data to determine the direction he will take the next iphone.
