Get Rid of Pesky Chin Hairs for Good!

It’s a little secret us women don’t like to talk about…but the fact is most women develop chin hair at an early age. As we get older, they become coarser, and more difficult to remove. So many of you are asking me, what is the best way to remove unwanted chin hair?

It’s a little secret us women don’t like to talk about…but the fact is most women develop chin hair at an early age. As we get older, they become coarser, and more difficult to remove. So many of you are asking me, what is the best way to remove unwanted chin hair?

Methods of hair removal are mainly based on preference and budget. A female reader wrote in and wanted to know about laser hair removal to get rid of the unwanted hair on her chin. Laser Hair removal is an excellent option for removing unwanted hair. Results are excellent and long-term. However, laser hair removal can be quite costly. One session alone can costs upwards of $150 for small body parts like the chin.

At home methods or course are the most efficient, but when it comes to precision, a shaky hand can do more harm than good. A few months ago a woman came to me who wanted to ask my opinion about the best way to remove the hair on her chin. The hair was incredibly coarse, and grew very quickly. She said she had to tweeze her chin hairs every other day, and I completely believed her.

She was trying for years to tweeze her own hairs and she was failing miserably. For starters, the hairs are difficult to see, so she wasn’t able to pull the hair from its root. She was leaving herself with broken hairs that started to curl and become infected. I challenged her to let me tweeze her chin hairs the right way, and she would see a visible difference in weeks. She agreed.

I began by seeing her every other day to properly pull the hair from its root. Within weeks, we were only seeing each other once a week. Now, just a few months later, she only visits me once a month. What I want you to learn is that tweezing or waxing can offer wonderful long term results, reduce hair growth and reduce hair volume. However, if you aren’t doing it correctly, you are wasting your time and energy and further exacerbating the problem.

So, in my opinion, the best method for removing unwanted hair is….whichever method suits your lifestyle and your budget. You can have excellent results from many different types of professional hair removal methods, if they are done properly and precisely.

If you have more specific questions, you can always email me at info@dayspaexpert.com

All You Need To Know About Acne Skin

Right side custom title:
NJ Acne Skin
Right side custom label:
Valentina Chistova NJ Skin Care and Wax Expert
There are several common beliefs about the causes and course of acne that simply don’t square with scientific studies. Fortunately, it isn’t necessary to understand them in depth to separate fact from fancy. Common experience can help persuade, too.

Diet

There’s no direct link between eating chocolate or greasy
cheeseburgers and developing acne. Soft drinks do not increase the
odds. What is true is that diet plays a role in all the body’s systems,
and so has a minor part in whether acne is more or less likely.

For example, eating greasy foods doesn’t directly translate into
increased oil production from the sebaceous glands that contribute to
acne. But foods that do increase the oil production would. However,
excess iodized salt is the only food substance that has been shown to
have any substantial effect. It only worsens existing acne. It doesn’t
cause it.

Hygiene

Diet and hygiene are closely linked. But that’s more because people
tend to have habits. People who have a non-nutritious or unhealthy diet
tend to have poor hygiene habits as well. But even here the influence
on the development of acne is minor at best.

The odds of acne are increased when a pore gets plugged and bacteria are trapped inside. White blood cells rush to the area to combat the bacteria. Trapped dead skin cells contribute. The result can be inflammation and the creation of pus, a component of one type of acne.

So, hygiene habits that tend to close the pores can play a role. But
the effect is minimal. The dead skin cells and bacteria that get
trapped, and can’t make their way out of the pore to the surface, are
only somewhat influenced by whether a person washes the face regularly
and well. After acne occurs good skin care is particularly important, though.

A mild cleansing twice a day with soap and water, not heavy
scrubbing several times per day, is best. That helps encourage healthy
skin in general.

But acne is strongly influenced by excess sebum production (a natural skin oil), triggered primarily by hormones. Good hygiene
is a good idea for many reasons. But it helps more in treating acne
that has already occurred by providing a good surface for medications
to do their work most effectively.

Harsh cleansers applied roughly don’t just clear away the excess oil
that plays a role in acne formation. Rather, it weakens the skin’s
ability to deal with it. Also, contemporary makeup formulations will
rarely increase the odds of forming acne.

Stress

As a factor that weakens the immune system and influences hormones,
stress might be thought to play a role in the onset of acne. But no
clear correlation is found in major studies. Stress can have a small
effect on acne that has already formed, but as a possible cause it
ranks very low on the list.

Here again, though, people who experience excess or chronic stress
tend to be in the cluster of those who have other health problems.
Always a good thing to avoid. Keep in mind that stress and being
challenged by ordinary life events are not the same thing. Stress
occurs when someone thinks they’re not up to the task of dealing with
those challenges well.

Medication

Increasing the dosage of over the counter (or, worse, prescription)
medications to treat acne is harmful, not helpful. At best, it wastes
medication. At worst, it can actually harm the skin. Stick to the
recommendations on the instructions. If over the counter medications
don’t clear up the condition within a couple of weeks, seek the
guidance of a dermatologist for better treatments.

Looking to get the best brows on a budget?  If aren’t able to get to a professional eyebrow shaping expert, then try some of my simple tips for shaping and cleaning your eyebrows.  Over the years, I have been asked many questions on the art of brow shaping.
It’s my dedication and understanding that brows can give beauty, and
take it away, that drives my passion for eyebrow shaping.

Below are some of the questions readers have written in as well as
questions I have been asked during interviews about beauty and brows.
I hope you enjoy the information and as always, your personal questions
are always welcomed. Email me at info@dayspaexpert.com.

Q: How do you know what kind of brow work best for a particular person?

A: Eyebrow shapes are not determined by people,
they are determined by our features and facial structure.  Bone
structure as well as the size, shape and position of our eyes, nose,
cheeks etc help determine what shape and width would best suit an
individual. This is why it is important not to always follow trends.

Q: What trends do you see in brows?

A: Today’s brows are playing a bigger role than
ever in a woman’s beauty, and rightfully so.  Eyebrows frame our face
and are the crowing jewel for our eyes.  Today I see women leaving more
of their natural brow’s thickness in place.  I used to see women who
would pluck and tweeze their eyebrows until there was only thin, pencil
like lines left. I never understood this.  A fuller, more defined brow
is in today, but again, it won’t look right on everyone.

Q: What are  the biggest ‘don’ts’ for eyebrows

A: The biggest mistake a woman can make with her
brows is to follow a trend. I never recommend drastic changes to the
eyebrows. I always follow what nature has given, and then make subtle
improvements to clean and enhance the shape that is already there.  If
someone has straight eyebrows, I can not give them a dramatic arch.  I
can work with their brow to help enhance their arch so that it brings
out their eyes and facial features.

Q: Is there a mistake you see people making often with their eyebrows?

A: Over-plucking is one of the biggest mistakes I
see.  It starts with just a few hairs, and before you know it, half of
their eyebrow is gone.  Eyebrows can be stubborn, they don’t always
grow back as fast as we would like, and sometimes they do not grow back
at all.  I always tell people, be careful what you pull out, because it
might not come back!

Q: Can people ‘change’ their style of brow … does it ever make sense to?

A: We should’nt really ‘change’ our eyebrows. Like
I said, we can enhance the brows, help define the arch better, clean up
stray hairs to create a more defined line, but we essentially can not
change them. Our facial features determine where our eyebrows should
begin and end, and where the peak of the arch should be.  If we start
changing all of that around, our brows will not be in harmony with the
rest of our face.

Q: Can people use their brows to balance their face and/or help them look younger … how?

A: Yes definitely. There are so many ways.
Knowing where the brows should start and end will help bring out our
truest symmetry.  Cleaning up bushy eyebrows dramatically opens the eye
area and creates more clean space on the brow bone, giving the
appearance of a wider eye.  Wider eyes can help us look years younger.

The first thing I do when I see a client for eyebrow shaping at my NJ Spa is study their face straight on.  I observe their facial features
and take a mental measurement of the structure of their face.
Remember, eyebrows do not come in a ‘one size fits all’ strategy.  That
is why I do not recommend people bring in photos of eyebrows that they
want.  So try to avoid cutting out pictures of your favorite
celebrity’s eyebrows and duplicating them.  Chances are, these eyebrows
will not look good on your face.

Winter Versus Summer Skin Care and Tips to Protect Your Skin

Just as your body needs different clothing to protect it against the changing weather, your skin needs a different skin care regime to properly protect it from the elements. As the body’s largest organ, skin is far more delicate than you probably realize. Here is a closer look at how winter versus summer affects skin and its care. Why is skin care different in winter than in summer months?

Just as your body needs different clothing to protect it against the changing weather, your skin needs a different skin care regime to properly protect it from the elements. As the body’s largest organ, skin is far more delicate than you probably realize. Here is a closer look at how winter versus summer affects skin and its care.

Why is skin care different in winter than in summer months?

Winter months generally are colder and drier than summer months when heat and humidity levels are on the rise. When skin is exposed to the harsh winter weather, it takes a beating, becoming excessively dry, irritated and chapped. Clothing protects most skin but we often fail to protect our faces. Moving indoors isn’t any better. Constantly running heaters and dehumidifiers sap every bit of moisture from the air.

During the summer, temperatures warm and more skin becomes exposed to the elements. Higher temperatures and humidity levels increase the amount of sweat the body produces in an attempt to cool off. As an unintentional consequence, skin becomes oilier and more prone to pimples and other irritation. Swimming is great way to cool off however exposure to harsh pool chemicals and salt water can lead to excessive dryness.

Tips for protecting skin during the winter months:

Apply sunscreen regularly because you’re just as likely to sunburn in the winter as you are in summer. Apply a sunscreen, moisturizer or make-up with a minimum SPF of 15. Be sure to protect lips by wearing lipstick or lip balm with sun protection. Stop licking lips!

Moisturize. Add moisture to inside air by turning on a humidifier. If you don’t have one, place a pan of water near radiator or heat source. Plants help moisturize the air. Add moisture to your body by using emollient-based soaps, lotions and creams.

Take shorter, warmer showers and baths. Hot water strips away natural oils as does staying submerged in water. Adding moisturizers to bath water helps, but take care when exiting as tub will be slippery.

Reduce the number of times you apply toner after cleansing and use toners with no or low alcohol levels. Gently exfoliate using a washcloth or scrub to remove dead skin cells and stimulate skin.

Tips for protecting skin during summer months:

Always protect your skin from the effects of ultraviolet radiation by applying sunscreen, wearing sun protective clothing, and seeking shade whenever possible. Stay out of the sun when it’s strongest, between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm.

Excessive sweat and oils clog pores so use a cooling cleanser containing salicylic acid to keep skin blemishes under control. Cleansers made with eucalyptus or menthol extracts feel good and help keep pores clean and open.

Change your moisturizing products because skin doesn’t need as much moisturizing protection during summer as it does during winter.

Always rinse your body with cool water after swimming to remove chlorine and salt.

A facial mask applied once a week will deep-clean pores and help skin retain its natural pH balance. Use a mister to keep skin cool and moist.

Eyebrow Shaping For Men? Do or Don’t?

Body hair removal for men has been a hot ticket item at many salons and spas across the country.  As fashion for men moves to the forefront of the industry, many American men are getting into full body grooming, which includes wax hair removal from head to toe.

Men waxing hair off of their body isn’t anything new.  For decades men have been ‘taking off their sweaters’ to show off a cleaner, smoother torso.  But it seems that recently more and more men are coming to the spa to have their eyebrows waxed.  At first I have to admit, I was surprised.  Then I realized that this makes perfect sense.  Eyebrows after all have an incredible importance when it comes to our appearance.  Our Eyebrows shape and frame our features, so why shouldn’t a man care for his as well?

Eyebrow shaping for men is a slightly more delicate situation than it is for a woman.  A man’s eyebrows should look groomed, but not too groomed.  We don’t want them to be bushy, but at the same time we don’t want them to be too perfect.

When I shape a man’s eyebrows, I use a combination of waxing to remove larger areas of hair and tweezing to remove fewer hairs that have gone astray.  The goal is to groom the eyebrows so that they look naturally shaped and not perfectly plucked.  Most of the same principals apply…the starting point, ending point and where the arch peaks.  The only difference is being careful not to over wax a man’s eyebrows.  Very thin eyebrows on a man could be seen as a feminine trait.  So we want to leave enough thickness in his brows to naturally match his masculine facial features.

I am happy to see more and more men coming to me for eyebrow waxing.  I have always said that eyebrows are a woman’s best fashion accessory, and I guess they are a man’s too!

NJ Skin Care Expert Talks About Teen Acne Problems and Solutions

Question: Hi Val- why does my teenage son only get bad acne around his chin and lower cheeks? The rest of his face seems fine.

Question: Hi Val- why does my teenage son only get bad acne around his chin and lower cheeks?  The rest of his face seems fine.

Valentina: This is very common for teens. Acne around the chin is usually from overactive hormones, something all teens most likely will experience.  The
overactive hormones produce extra sebum (oil) around the chin and lower
jaw line which tends to cause higher levels of acne there.

Your teen should be on a good skin care regimen.  He should wash his face twice a day and follow that up with a toner and acne treatment for affected areas.  If areas of his face are dry he should use a gentle moisturizer for those areas.  Use an acne fighting exfoliator at least once a week as well.

It is a good idea to begin him on a monthly teen facial routine.  The facial will help extract any impurities that are trapped beneath the skin’s surface.  Removing them during a facial will often prevent them from forming whiteheads later on.  Our Valentina's teen facial is formulated specifically for the problems of teen skin, we use all natural, anti-oxidant products.

It is important to regularly clean cell phones as well.  Cell phones are notoriously dirty and full of bacteria.  We often press them up against our cheeks when we talk which can cause breakouts.  Also try to keep his hands away from his face.  When oils from our fingers are transposed onto our skin, breakouts are likely.

If his skin does not respond to over the counter medicine, a dermatologist can recommend a prescription to treat his acne.

NJ Skin Care Expert Suggests Best Anti-Aging Facials Including Chemical Facial Peels

I’m in my mid-30’s. I have a few small lines and wrinkles, mainly from the sun. I want to start treating and preventing any more from forming! Which treatments do you recommend? I heard chemical peels are good?

Hello Valentina- what is the best anti-aging treatment? I’m in my mid-30’s. I have a few small lines and wrinkles, mainly from the sun. I want to start treating and preventing any more from forming! Which treatments do you recommend? I heard chemical peels are good?

Valentina:  Chemical peels are an excellent way to treat and combat the signs of aging.  However, like T-Shirts, there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to skin care.  While
chemical peels are wonderful, you really need to have your skin
analyzed to see which approach will yield the best results for you.

Here are some answers to commonly asked questions regarding Chemical Facial Peels.  I am not addressing questions of deep chemical peels since those are performed only by doctors and plastic surgeons.  I
hope this helps. And remember, make a consultation to have your skin
analyzed before booking an appointment for a Chemical Facial Peel.  You want to make sure you are choosing the treatment that is best for your skin.

What is a Chemical Peel?

Typically used on the face, a chemical peel uses an acid solution to remove damaged outer layers of the skin.  A chemical peel can smooth skin texture and is great for treating blemishes, reducing wrinkles and uneven skin pigmentation.

Are Chemical Peels Dangerous?

If performed correctly by a trained
professional, the risk of injury from a chemical peel is low. However,
you should always be aware that there could be negative side effects
from any advanced skin care treatment like a chemical peel.    These risks include scarring, infection, swelling, changes in skin tone, and cold sore outbreaks.  This
is why it is so critical to have a comprehensive consultation with the
professional who is performing your chemical facial peel.    You will be asked about any medications you are on, medical history and exposure to the sun.

Can anyone get a chemical facial peel?

Most people with acne, uneven pigments or wrinkles can get chemical peels.  There
are different types of chemical peels, so you should inquire about
which peel would help the specific condition you are looking to treat.  If you have been taking Acutane, you may have to wait before getting your peel.  If your skin has a tendency to keloid, another treatment may be suggested for you.  A professional consultation will help determine which peel is best for you.

Do Chemical Peels hurt?

Depending on how strong of a peel you get, you
can expect a burning and tingling sensation during the peel while the
solution is on your face.  Remember, a deep chemical facial peel is a different story.  I am speaking of lower grade peels that can be performed in a spa by a trained professional.

I hope this helps answer some questions you may have had.  If you have further questions, email me at info@dayspaexpert.com .

Does Vitamin C Help Prevent Wrinkles? NJ Skin Care Expert Answers

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

Question: Hi Valentina, I am a 45 year old woman with sun damaged skin. I have heard that using Vitamin C can help reduce wrinkles.  Is this true?

Valentina:   I’m so glad you brought up this subject.  Vitamin C is one of the most widely used and promoted skin care ingredients.   The variety and amount of Vitamin C skin care products on the market today has exploded, making the situation somewhat complicated.

On one hand, topical vitamin C is scientifically validated for wrinkle reduction and skin rejuvenation.  However, that being said, not all C’s are created equal.

Topical Vitamin C helps the skin in two ways.  First, it helps your skin produce collagen, a key factor in keeping the skin firm and plump.  Second, vitamin C is an antioxidant that can help fight free radicals which damage the skin causing fine lines and wrinkles.

Products that claim to contain Vitamin C may be insufficient for many reasons.  First, Vitamin C can become oxidized in the presence of air if not properly stored.  When the C becomes oxidized, not only can it not boost collagen production, but it can actually CAUSE free radical damage from the corrupted C.  Second, only high concentrations of fat soluble C can deliver enough vitamin C to the cells to be effective.  Most over the counter products either contain oxidized forms of C or do not contain high enough levels, rendering the product useless.

In the right form and dosage, Vitamin C can be highly effective in improving your skin’s texture, reducing fine lines and preventing further free radical damage.

I recommend and use Skin Ceuticals Serum C10.  This serum combines ferulic acid with 10% pure vitamin C to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, neutralizes free radicals, defends against environmental damage, and stimulates collagen synthesis.  This is one of the most well known and effective Vitamin C products in the skin care industry. You can purchase this product from our store online by visiting by clicking on http://www.store-aquamedicaspa.com/detail.aspx?ID=58

Remember, before you invest your money in a Vitamin C product, check with a skin care professional to see if the product is even capable of delivering on its promise.  Most over the counter Vitamin C products are not manufactured to stabilize the Vitamin C (prevent the C from oxidizing) or they do not contain high enough levels.

I hope this answers your question, it was a great one!

NJ Spa Owner Answers Your Questions on Oily Skin and Summer Heat

I have very oily skin. In the summer, it seems to get worse. If it’s hot outside, it feels like the second I walk out the door my face is full of oil. How can I keep my skin from getting too oily in the hot summer weather?

Summer time can indeed be a disaster for anyone with oily skin.  The face often appears very shiny and makeup can easily melt right off due to the buildup of oil.  It’s especially important that people with oily skin follow these simple tips to help prevent excess oil buildup.

1.        Keep your skin clean over summer by washing twice a day.  The soap you choose is extremely important.  A harsh soap will over-dry your skin, causing even more oil to develop.  A gentle antibacterial soap or special cleansing soap is good for oily skin.  Look for ingredients chamomile and tea tree oil if you want to go herbal.

2.       Use a Tone specifically for your type of skin: I don’t recommend harsh astringents, as I said, stripping too much oil from your skin will only cause skin to produce even more.  Use a balancing Toner for oily skin after each washing.  This will help dry up oily spots and hydrate dry areas, for combination skin.  During the day, blot your skin with a pad soaked with the toner.  You will have to reapply make up in between.  But you can blog to lift excess oil.  You can also blot with a dry tissue or any other clean cloth that will absorb oil.

3.       Be careful with moisturizers!  If you have combination skin, you need to moisturize areas of your skin that are dry.  If your skin is completely oily, you need very little to no moisturizer.  And choose a moisturizer that balances oily skin.  4.       Use a clay masque at night to help reduce oil.5.       Use makeup that is oil free.  Mineral makeup works great for oily skin.

Be sure to follow these few guidelines over summer when oil production can be at its highest!  Keep absorbing tissues on hand to gently blot excess oil away. And remember, do not over wash your skin to dry up all of the oil!  Be gentle and kind to your skin, follow these rules and your skin will be kind to you!  J
