Silk has long been admired for its luxurious feel and quality in the textile industry. However, a new frontier is now being explored by scientist at Massachusetts’ Tufts University. They have created translucent, edible silk membranes they have dubbed “edible optics”.
So what could this silky innovation in mean to you?
E-Coli Detector: A thin silk holographic membrane will turn color to warn you if your fruits or veggies are tainted. If you eat the detector that’s okay – it’s edible!
Blood Glucose Monitor: A thin membrane is planted just below the skins surface. It will change color to alert you regarding your blood sugar level.
According to one of the researchers the applications are limitless. For more on possible uses visit http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/08/07/2015216
“Edible optics” is an innovative new use of a material. Now, we will see how it will be put to use. What are the innovative applications that will have the biggest impact on society, business and healthcare?
