Comfort

With their generous side bolsters and adjustable under-thigh
support, the sport seats in our X6 easily accommodated a wide range of
drivers (as well as front passengers). Strangely, there is no lumbar
adjustment, a sin at this price point. If you want that feature, you'll
need to spring for the optional multicontour seats, which have power
adjustments for the side wings, the upper back and the lumbar regions.
A few staffers taller than 6 feet appreciated the pads on the console
sides, which prevented their long legs from banging into the attractive
but hard wood trim.

The rear-wheel-drive 2008 BMW 135i is powered by the same
twin-turbocharged six-cylinder found in the larger 335i, yet because of
its lighter curb weight, the 135i slightly out-accelerates its larger
sibling from zero to 60 mph in a tidy 5.0 seconds. The 335i essentially
equals that. Producing 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque,
this 3.0-liter inline-6 spreads its ample thrust across a broad range,
with highway passing easily accomplished without dropping down a gear.
EPA fuel economy is 17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined. We
averaged 20.8 mpg and even managed 28 and 29 mpg on a pair of two-hour
road trips.

But in practical terms, one may wonder if an M3 is worth nearly
$17,000 more than the thoroughly capable 335i coupe. The latter is
certainly quick enough (sprints to 60 mph in a blistering 4.9 seconds),
it handles great and offers a less aggressive ride. For most people,
therefore, the answer is no — they'll be sufficiently giddy with the
performance and overall livability of the 335i.

Performance

As always, we drove the Flex on a wide variety of roads and, not
surprisingly, it was most happy out on the highway. Around town and in
parking garages, the wide boxy front end can give the impression that
you're about to hit every mailbox and pedestrian around. Nose-in
parking can be a pain and smaller drivers in particular should take
note of this on a test drive. On the upside, the steering is reasonably
precise for this type of vehicle, being light enough at parking speeds
and weighting up well at higher ones. The Flex quite competently
handled the winding, rolling roads of Ontario cottage country. If,
however, you find yourself taking ski vacations into mountains,
something more involving like the Mazda CX-9 is a much better choice.
