Trend Toward Paid Membership Forums

BY Lois Carter FayThu Aug 12, 2004 at 6:11 PM
This blog is written by a member of our blogging community and expresses that member's views alone.

Have you noticed a trend toward paid forums to help business owners or managers keep abreast of the latest and greatest information available to them? I believe I'm seeing a trend toward this...at least I hope so!

Of course, online communities/membership forums have been around for years. From what I can see, most of them started out as free forums. Those that have tried to change from free to paid don't seem to have done well. But what about the ones that start out primarily as paid forums (perhaps with a smaller free section)?

I recently surveyed my ezine readers [I produce a weekly marketing e-newsletter, "MarketingIdeaShop Brainy Tidbits" that is distributed to a variety of small business owners and managers] and found that one of the things they would like me to provide on my website, MarketingIdeaShop.com, is a forum. However, since this site is not niched very small, this does not seem like a worthwhile effort to me.

However, many of my readers are women business owners. I have researched the websites focused on helping women business owners succeed, and most of them tend to be government-related sites like the Women's Business Centers or association websites, like NAWBO.

Therefore, I am in the process of creating a new website focusing on helping women business owners succeed and thrive both professionally and personally, and it will include a paid membership forum. WomenBusinessSuccess.com will launch at the end of September.

There are currently a few really good forums available for small business owners. A couple are Turning Ideas Into Dollars, Marketing Profs, and the Idea Cafe.

There are also several paid Internet marketing sites -- Corey Rudl's "The Secrets to Their Success" comes to mind. And I just received an email from Tom Antion telling me he's launching a paid membership site, as well.

I'd love to see a list of the forums (paid and unpaid) that y'all think are really good. Please post them here or send me an email and tell me what you think.

Also, what do you think these forums should/must include to be successful? What makes them useful?

It's not a business site at all, but as a business I find fascinating www.inclusiondailynews.com

It's a subscription news service regarding the international disability rights movement. For a hundred and fifty bucks a year you get a daily email with 30 to 40 hierarchally ranked and summarized stories and links aimed at an intriguing niche. You can see their stories as syndicated at The Ragged Edge Magazine http://www.raggededgemagazine.com/drn/08_04.html

Inclusion Daily News does have a forum as well, and I like having powerfully edited news stories as context for the forum. Hope this is close enough to on topic. I'll be interested to see what others say.

I'm curious why someone would pay $150 a year to receive these stories from one news source (Inclusion Daily News) when they could sign up for a news aggregator like NewsGator and get targeted feeds from multiple sources.

OK, interesting question. I don't know NewsGator, but I've got a Kinja account with 30+blogs on it and it's a serious committment to go through it. In large part this is because it gathers updates from a variety of different sources with a large number of different themes (my many and varied interests.) Inclusion Daily News is more like a series of google news alerts, where the sources aren't the same, but the subjects are, there is a relatively limited theme.

Plus, having a human on the other end adds lots of advantages as well. Like original summaries of stories, links to advocacy organizations of the day, this day in history, ranking of the stories by how interesting and well written they are (in the some one's opinion). I don't know for sure, but I'm interested in the human task of news aggregating and its advantages over automated services.

In other words, I think it's a higher quality, more focused news environment from which to launch discussions.

I think that you were before on the site with Russian mail brides, the site that sell addresses.I agree it can be rather disappointing.

About 5 percent of women that register to the site, delete themselves in 5-10 days, they get disappointed in Internet dating services or it was done on spur of a moment or they quickly found someone on the site and want to continue communication only with him. On the site that sell emails they won't just answer.

Normally, medical treatment of obesity, such as administering diet tablets, begins with weight loss treatment of four weeks, together with a suitable fitness program. In case the above plan does not show success to achieve a mean weight reduction of 0.5kg/week ( roughly one pound/week) then drug treatment might be appropriate. Cardiovascular, underlying hormonal or metabolic conditions should be crossed out prior to starting drug therapy.
What of it think???
