But stomp on the accelerator and you're left for a second or two
wondering when the power's going to kick in. When merging on the
freeway, the pedal is practically down to the floor when you feel the
V8 pull away. The delay is caused by a combination of rather tall
gearing, slow shifts and � perhaps most relevantly � an electronic
throttle that's calibrated to kick in when the pedal is depressed
farther down than what many of us are used to. This strategy helps the
2009 Kia Borrego achieve better fuel economy by forcing the driver to
accelerate more gradually (jackrabbit starts notoriously drop gas
mileage). But it is annoying, and it can give the average person the
impression that the powertrain just can't cut it. Leave it in cruise
control, however, and even motoring uphill with a heavy load is a
breeze.

Either way, the Escape Hybrid is not cheap. Similarly equipped
non-hybrid compact SUVs such as the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue and Toyota
RAV4 get fuel economy that's 5 or 6 mpg less, but they also cost
thousands less. For that matter, so does the standard Escape. Then
there's the Saturn Vue Green Line, a mild hybrid that still manages 28
mpg combined. The Saturn, however, can't propel itself solely on
electric power like the Escape (making it much less efficient in the
city) and it's not available in an AWD version.

The Edge's saving grace is its voice-activated Sync multimedia
interface and navigation system. Standard on the Limited trim, it
provides such niceties as Bluetooth connectivity, real-time traffic
information and current gas prices at stations along your route. A

watch a DVD if the Edge is in Park. The system's multifunction screen
is arguably the best in the business. The
