So what's the catch? Well, for starters, you can't buy one yet. But
that's not for a lack of technological readiness; rather, what's
lacking is infrastructure. As of this writing, there are 66 operational
hydrogen refueling stations in the U.S., according to the National
Hydrogen Association, and most of them are clustered in California and
the Northeast. It's a classic chicken-and-egg dilemma: Automakers won't
mass-produce fuel cell vehicles until the infrastructure is there, and
there won't be significant private investment in infrastructure until
fuel cell vehicles are being mass-produced.

Performance

However, the steering, though precise, is too light and devoid of
road feel for a car this capable. There is no build-up in effort when
you're carving up corners, and the wheel itself is too big in diameter,
making us long for the smaller "Tuff" steering wheel that was available
back in the day.

Ford F-150 Ford Focus SES

The question, of course, is whether this makeover is sufficiently
deep to keep the Focus a viable and recommended choice for a small car.
To find out, we bought a 2008 Ford Focus SES Coupe for our long-term
program. This road test concerns that car.

Function

Even if you load up your F-150 with options, the controls remain
fairly straightforward and intuitive. The truck offers both USB and
standard audio jacks, and Ford has installed more storage compartments
for things like key cards and cell phones. The center console box is
larger and can stow two laptops within, while the flat rear floor and
flip-up rear seats allow seriously large items to be carried inside the
truck's cabin. The Ford guys demonstrated this by putting a 52-inch
flat-panel TV box inside the rear compartment of the F-150; none of the
truck's competitors were able to accommodate this box.

Mini Cooper S Clubman Function

You know that old saying about form following function? Well,
Mini's interior design team apparently prefers it the other way around.
Aesthetically, the Clubman's gauges and control layout are every bit as
cute as its adorable mug. Functionally, however, they leave much to be
desired, from the center-mounted speedometer to those inscrutable banks
of metallic toggle switches — and don't get us started on the downright
nonsensical radio controls. (Good luck finding the volume knob.) To be
fair, most Clubman buyers will probably be quick to forgive its
ergonomic eccentricities. But we're not so sympathetic. Frankly, all of
the Clubman's competitors offer more intuitive driver interfaces.

Toyota RAV4 Performance

Going the other way, braking performance is similarly strong, with
a panic stop from 60 mph taking just 120 feet. Furthermore, the RAV4's
brakes showed minimal fade after a succession of these tests. Pedal
feel is on the soft side — they honestly don't feel as strong as they
are — though the action is progressive.
