The New Ad Spec — Post A Comment

This blog is written by a member of our blogging community and expresses that member's views alone.

User generated content will one day be dominated by people who write personal and highly believable recommendations that are fake.

This undetectable form of free advertising spoofs the system. Clog the tubes if you will. It's already happening. Much like the comments found on this site. Fast Company must attract advertisers that can't help telling/selling their ideas and products to the readers. Blogs and social networks are beginning to suffer from spam as well as the email/identity harvesting of the genuine comments from readers.

Malicious advertising will one day take advantage of these new communication and aggregation methods and use them against the publisher as well as the reader to further their cause.

Not unlike global warming it is something that is inevitable if we don't take it more seriously. That is why when I see a high adoption of OpenID I hope for a Seth Godin like web where you can't hide and being honest publicly is the only way you can use web. Maybe it sounds like control. I like to think of it as law.

There is a hope that we'll keep the web a good resource for secure communications, accurate information and honest recommendations.

We just have to stop rewarding people for using poor tactics to acquire new customers.
