First, look around at your existing containers. Do you have neglected
containers with old, scraggly plants that are anemic and barely alive?
It might be time to pull them out and start fresh. It's a good idea to
empty out the old soil, too. Wash the container and start with a high
quality organic potting mix.
One great way to know if a plant is appropriate for your
garden is to check the hardiness zone of your garden. The USDA has
produced a climate zone map to help you choose winter-hardy plants.
Know your zone. Remember that you can always grow plants that are hardy
in the climates with lower numbers than yours, but higher numbers are
sure death come winter. For example, if you live in Zone 8, you can
grow anything from Zone 8 on down. Plants with hardiness zone numbers
higher than your region are not adapted for your area. However, many
gardeners know these plants can provide a vibrant shot of seasonal and
container color, and can often be overwintered.
Each kind of plant has its own preference for variations of
sunlight or shade, too. This information is included on the plant label
Each fertilizer is labeled with three numbers that indicate the
strength by percentage of each nutrient. For example, 23-6-8 means that
the product contains 23% nitrogen, 6% phosphorous, and 8% potassium.
Organic and synthetic. Organic fertilizers are produced naturally
and include compost or manure. Synthetic fertilizers are produced
chemically, and are more potent. These include most granular
fertilizers at your garden center. Both organic and synthetic
fertilizers are good for plants, but in very different ways. Synthetic
fertilizers contain exactly what’s on their label expressed as N-P-K.
They are fast acting but here today and gone tomorrow, so you must
apply them often. Organic fertilizers also bear N-P-K percentages on
the label, but these are usually in the low single digits. Such minimal
nutrient levels means you must use a lot of product to match the high
potency of synthetics. Organics are slower to take effect because they
must interact with soil microorganisms, but are long lasting. These
natural fertilizers contain many of the lesser nutrients too, which
improve soil and overall plant health.
Outdoor Lighting Pre-Wire Option: An alternative option
Goodway Landscape offers is to bury the low-voltage wire into the
ground when we install your irrigation system for a future nightscape.
This allows customers who may not be ready to install their lighting
during the first phase to do so at a later date and save money.
