According to one philosophy, drug addiction is a twin problem. It consists of physical and emotional dependency on certain chemicals and is further compounded by some kind of pre-existing disorders of mind such as, bipolar disease and clinical depression. It is generally believed by this set of philosophy that the already existing mental disorder gives birth to such a dependency as people take to drugs as a means of escape from their troubles. This is taken to be the primary cause of addiction hence should be treated first by a drug rehab program.

Sometimes, it is also viewed as a disease by another school of thought. Some others believe that the dependency on chemicals leads to chemical imbalances of permanent nature in the neurological system of the addict. This needs a psychotropic treatment with medication. These theories are not absolutely true. The national average of the addiction treatment recovery rate is merely 16% to 20%, which means that there is lot to be done to bring this recovery rate to a desirable level. There is however the fourth philosophy which has proved more accurate and applicable. This talks about the life cycle of drug addiction.

It begins with any kind of problem, emotion or physical pain or any other discomfort. And he then takes to drugs to get a relief and he assigns a great value to the drugs which bought him this relief. He in turn is filled with great despair due to addiction that he wants to escape from them through recovery treatment.
