* Reliance Industries Ltd reported a fourth straight decline in quarterly profits on shrinking refining margins and reduced exports due to a global economic downturn; the company posted a 6.4% fall in net profit at Rs 38.5 bn for the second quarter of this year compared to Rs 41.1 bn in the year-ago period (BS)

* The power equipment manufacturing plant of the NTPC-BHEL joint venture, NTPCBHEL Power Projects Private Ltd, will be set up at Mannavaram in Andhra Pradesh and entail an investment of Rs 60 bn (BS)

* Higher sales volumes, lower raw material costs and excise duty helped Mahindra & Mahindra post its highest ever net profit of Rs 7bn for the second quarter of this fiscal compared with Rs 2bn in the same period last year (BL)

* ONGC has reported its first gain in five quarters by registering a 5.9% increase in its net profit during the second quarter of 2009-10; the net profit for the quarter stood at Rs 50.9 bn (Rs 48.0 bn for the corresponding quarter previous year). This is on account of lower subsidy outgo and higher per barrel realisation on crude oil sales (BL)

* HMSIL has started operations at a third production line in its factory at Manesar in Gurgaon, after having reached an agreement on pay revision for permanent workers with its labour unions, which were on a lengthy agitation till now (BS)

 * The six regional channels of Zee will soon come under the ambit of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (after the company’s board of directors approved the proposed share swap ratio for the acquisition of the regional entertainment business (R-GEC) currently under Zee News Ltd (BS)

* Since selling its captive technology unit to Wipro Technologies last December, Citigroup has expanded its engagement with the Indian vendor by also offering business process outsourcing contracts (BL)

* The Centre approved Rural Electrification Corporation’s proposal for a FPO. The issue will constitute 20% of the existing paid-up capital of the company, fresh equity of 15% and disinvestment of 5% (BL)

* DLF Ltd said Q2FY10 profit fell 77% to Rs4.4bn from Rs19.3bn a year ago as property prices are yet to recover after the boom that ended last year (Mint) Economic/Regulatory development * Exports declined 13.8% in September, falling for the twelfth month in a row, but the pace of contraction has slowed from a high of 39.2 and 31.9% in May and June, respectively. During the first half of the current year, overseas shipments contracted 28.5% (BS)

* The headline inflation rate, as measured by the Wholesale Price Index, inched up to 1.51% for the week ended October 17, primarily due to a rise in oil prices on a year-on-year basis. The inflation rate was 10.82% in the corresponding period in 2008 (BS)

* The government approved a remunerative price of Rs 129.84 for a quintal of sugarcane during the 2009-10 season, beginning this month. It also approved a bonus of Rs 50 per quintal for paddy farmers during the 2009-10 marketing season (OctoberSeptember) (BS) International trends

* The US economy grew in the third quarter for the first time in more than a year as government stimulus helped lift consumer spending and home building, fueling an unexpectedly strong advance; Signaling the end of the worst recession in 70 years, the Commerce Department said the economy expanded at an annual rate of 3.5% in the July-September period, snapping four down quarters with its fastest growth pace since the third quarter of 2007 and exceeding forecasts for a 3.3% rate (BS)
