One of the things that brought about modern civilisation and its continual development is research. From the discovery of premordial tools by the caveman to industrial revolution. This is one phenomenon that modern man is passionate about. I am aware that sometime it could be mundane and boring but I find that through researches I have been able to make inroad into
the difference between successfull and unsuccessfull companies। The drive for survival, profit and diversification is the legacy of free market economy and only those organisations willing to undertake researches benefit।
The industrial revolution in Europe in the 19th century, apart from being results of practical research was also a relflaection of laissez-fairez economic system advocated by researchers and economists of that generation namely Alfred Marshal, David Ricardo and Adam Smith. We noted the opposing views of this theory as elitis by Karl Marx, during that generation. this contrary view led to communist economic block in eastern Europe starting from USSR in 1917. The communist block bowed to laissez-fairez system when
Presiden Mikhail Gorbachev introduced Perestroika and glasnot.
Come to think about it almost all educational career require some levels of research work. Academic research is indispensible, for I consider the exercise a way of equipping oneself for wealth creation while conquering illiteracy and poverty. Of course for some individuals they may take the exercise as hobby but for corporate organisations, professionals and consultants the exercise is business. The result of some researches had turned out to be deciding factor between success and failure.
In this exercise you would discover why some companies are profitable while others are just on the periphery or unprofitable. The same logic goes for governments - whether they succeeded or failed. In '80s when Rank Xerox was under threat of extinction by its Japanese competitors
it was research that enabled the company to overcome the onslaught when relatively more capitalised companies in the industry were scared of venturing into such capital intensive research.
The significance of research cannot be over-emphasised. Indeed many manufacturing and corporate organisations have found Research & Development Department inevitable. Needless to explain that any company wishing to keep abreast with technological developments indispensible. The results are the innovations and technological developments that we notice and apply daily across the globe. They are also responsible for the observance of good corporate governance, social responsiblity and now green environment campaign.
Sometimes I give thought to some of the researches that transformed the world and the way we live. Apart from industrial revolution mentioned earlier, the Wright Brothers no doubt stunned the world with their researches that led to the invention of aeroplane. How many weeks/months would it have been taking individuals to cross the Atlantic ocean? Researches in this area has gone beyond mere aeroplane and indeed astrologists have demystified the space.
Academic and scietific researches that led to astrological discoveries have become the hallmark of 20th century technological developments। Russian astronauts were the first to send space craft with a dog as the sole passenger. This feat was the most important discovery, because no one knew that organic being could survive the flight. The discovery gave impetus to the US Apollo II with three astronauts to land in the moon in 1969. Since then some western countries USSR, Japan,UK, France even China, have joined the race. As a conseqeunce they devote huge percentage of their budget to space programme.
I also spare time to watch TV documentaries which gave me insight into developments of different spheres of human endeavor. It was from such documentaries ICY, Hitech, Space exploration that popularised IT and eventually led to the development of the internet.
Any one that has interest in TV would invariably be interested in watching films. I watch fillms especially educative films. If I cannot watch it on TV/youtube, I watch the DVD, video or Ipod version. Some of the films that viewers talke about after watching are: Sex in the city; Father of the bride, titanic, Harry Porter, Spiderman, Live free and die hard, Blades of Glory, transformer and Journey where some of the best Hollywood actors and actresses performed. The interesting thing about these films is that contemporary lives in the cities are brought in the living rooms of millions of viewers.
Equally occupying my thought is the invention of computer. The monotony and drudgery of routine activities would have continually made life boring.
The idea of research is a powerful urge that led a young lad, Bill Gate to develop what is known today as Microsft Window software which is the most popular and easiest software on the web.
