Today in 1958, the Nautilus, a nuclear-powered submarine, became the first vessel to cross the North Pole underwater.

Even more great information can be found on nuclear submarine activity during the Cold War on the discovery channel. Although a great accomplishment at the time, the focus was to gain a strategic and tactical advantage over the (now-defunct, but future resurrect?) Soviet Union.

Once again leave it to the military to innovate and accomplish the "impossible." Thanks for the note.
