A root canal is usually necessary when the nerve is damaged or
diseased. This damage can come from bacteria from a cavity, gum
disease, infection or injury.
A root canal is done through a
small opening in the crown of the tooth and the pulp chamber and root
canals are cleaned out. Once the tooth is cleaned, the tooth is
medicated and temporarily sealed.
The dentist will determine if the tooth will need a crown or filling.
