In July of 2007, Goodway Landscape and some of its employees packed
their bags and headed east for Chicago! With our eye on the future, an
ever-increasing demand for water features in our installations, and a
love for the ecologically responsible Pond and Pondless™ Waterfall kits
Aquascape™ produces, we decided it was time to attend Pond College. For
nine days we attended seminars and took classes on everything from
Ecology to Customer Service. Goodway Landscape is 100% committed to
becoming The Pond Contractor.
Mycorrhizae are found in nature, but are very fragile. By disturbing
the ground, we destroy the web of mycorrhizae that lies just beneath
the surface. Basic building construction can destroy 20,000 to 40,000
years of soil development at one time. Fortunately, mycorrhizae can be
reintroduced and begin to enhance the soil rather quickly. As Monrovia
plants are added to the garden, the mycorrhizae in our soil will spread
to other areas, benefiting your entire landscape.
A critical component of the growing process is the soil. Plants grown
in nutrient-rich soils are healthier, with stronger root systems.
Monrovia is the only grower of premium ornamentals in the world that
custom blends 42 different soil mixes, including compost and native
soils.
As a gardener, you appreciate the outdoor environment. Keep in
mind that you can probably garden more efficiently than you do. Take
inventory of your gardening style and see if you can reduce the
herbicides and pesticides that you use. Can you switch from gasoline
powered tools to electric….or even human powered? Start composting your
green waste and mulch your plants to help them retain moisture and to
suppress weeds naturally. There are dozens of ways to reduce water
consumption – from selecting the right plants to more efficient
watering systems.

This is one of the easiest ways to get a focal point of color and
height. Monrovia now grows more than 100 different varieties of patio
trees - ranging from colorful bougainvillea, hibiscus and lantana to
edibles like citrus and pomegranate.
But this map has shortcomings. In the eastern half of the
country, the USDA map doesn't account for the beneficial effect of a
snow cover over perennial plants, the regularity or absence of
freeze-thaw cycles, or soil drainage during cold periods. And in the
rest of the country (west of the 100th meridian, which runs roughly
through the middle of North and South Dakota and down through Texas
west of Laredo), the USDA map fails.

The degree of damage
Identify pests so you know what kind of damage potential they
represent. For example, a gang of aphids can distort leaves, but they
are nothing compared to a gang of armyworms that can defoliate a shrub
overnight!
Once a pest is identified, you can choose one of these least toxic controls: MORE
1. Discourage small mites or aphids by knocking them off with a strong jet of water.
2. Buy and release beneficial bugs to feed on the pests.
3. Hand-pick larger bugs and worms off your plants.
4. Spray the plants with insecticidal soap for insects.
5. Spray the plants with BT or other biological controls.
