When All Else Fails, Add Porno
| posted by Fast Company staffThe Wall Street Journal (registration required) has a prescient piece in today's edition about a new mobile phone trend among Euro-pervs that will surely cross the pond faster than another BBC sitcom remake.
Broadband video phone service, it seems, is quickly catching on as a popular new smut outlet across the globe, particularly in Europe--and a profitable one, judging from the $1 billion in fees that mobile erotica is expected to rake in this year. As the Journal sagely points out, a media platform's adoption of porno is a key leading indicator that a technology is on the brink of making it big:
"Pornography helped drive the early adoption of new technologies such as the VCR and the Internet. Now, wireless providers in many countries are counting on sex to spur the use of their broadband cellphone services."
Note to telecom ad agencies: Scrap the syrupy broadband phone ads that has Daddy tucking junior into bed remotely from some god-forsaken Holiday Inn Express and sign Paris Hilton on before somebody else snaps her up.
