Job Hunting, eBay-Style

BY Fast Company staffSun Jan 23, 2005 at 6:40 PM

Move over, Monster. After a team of in-house creatives were displaced in the PeopleSoft/Oracle merger, the group turned to eBay to try and find work. Not as individual job seekers, however, but as a team. According to this post on AdFreak, AdWeek's blog, the team wanted to continue working together, and so they decided to auction themselves off.

"Take advantage of recent merger and acquisition activity in the technology sector, reads their post (eBay Item Number 3868319541.) "Their loss, your gain. An award-winning, clear-thinking, bottom-line-focused creative services organization is now immediately available to rock your bottom line. We are a creative team that's ready to plug and play. Today."

Is anyone taking them seriously? So far, not really. After more than five days up for auction, 17 bidders have driven the price up to, um, $41. (That's for access to their "contact information, resumes, portfolios"; negotiating hiring and salaries is done separately). Not so successful, maybe, but it's an interesting, if painful, way to find out what you're worth.

I think it's brilliant! As someone who works to build a synergistic team, they come with that built in. What's the value there? I could be great. I hope for them that some smart company who happens to be building an in-house creative group snatches them up. I deeply applaud what they're doing! Go team!

I agree with steven morris, to build team dynamics of this level takes time and work.
Wishing the team all the best.

Yes. highly creative and proactive.
Just a question of time until some corporate snatches them up.

Good idea, perhaps wrong platform. Why ebay? Perhaps they should advertise in some other venue. The right people are not seeing their message.

I think this is a great idea. I think they should start a company of their own. Did they get a severance?
Best of luck to them.

I agree with MZCRUS. I recently heard on the local news how one person landed a job by doing this on ebay but I can't imagine it becoming a trend. I even put up a video of myself on youtube as a resume and promoted it but have had no offers from that. You never know... Fast Co. is talking about it so they may get noticed by a prospective employer now.

We are becoming all bitter because of the problems brought to us by the crisis that hit our country very hard. The fact that we are left jobless because of many company closures is really a bad thing that may happen to a person. So, the question would be: "How would I survive in this world without money?” A lot of people are job searching these days, and during these kinds of times, job searching isn't the easiest proposition. Job boards aren't exactly exploding. The unemployment rate is the highest it's been in over 20 years, and there isn't a lot of ways for a person to get the fast cash they need, or a steady paycheck. Online job searching has become prevalent over the last decade. Most unemployed people are turning to online job ads, most without much success. But persistence will pay off, even if you need to get low interest loans or cash advances, you just have to keep job searching.
