The Apprentice 2: Buzz-A-Palooza

BY Fast Company staffThu Mar 18, 2004 at 5:59 PM

I'll admit it. I'm completely addicted to the Apprentice (not as in "I like it," but closer to "I have a problem"). That being the case, I snagged myself a press pass that allowed me to go poke around at the first casting call for The Apprentice 2, which took place in New York today.

The first thing I saw as I made my way to Trump's building on Wall Street was a throng of well-dressed Donald wannabes that snaked for more than six blocks through the heart of lower Manhattan. Never mind that a miserable wet snow had been falling for the last two days. That couldn't deter the first people in line to audition, one of whom said he had been waiting to get in since 11 PM two nights before. Most applicants, however, choose to arrive somewhere between the sensible hours of two or three that morning, some after having a night of St. Paddy's Day fun.

Why, you may ask, did these people (along with 750,000 others who Trump said had applied) want to get on the show?

"For me this has been a fun, geeky project to get into," said Jamie Hazan, who held up a by-now tattered poster board advertising his Web site, I-Want-To-Be-The-Apprentice.com, which he says has so far generated hits "in the six digits."

Others maybe just wanted to show off their entrepreneurial side.

"Somebody should be out here selling Trump Ice," suggested a very cold, and apparently thirsty, Swietlana Cahill, referring to Trump's line of bottled water that contestants on season one had been tasked with selling. Unfortunately Cahill probably didn't get to display her business savvy for Donald and the gang; she arrived at 7 AM and was stuck at the tail end of the line. One woman, Ashley Cheisler, had dashed into a convenience store to buy several pairs of socks that she was selling as gloves. So far, she had been the only taker.

One notable oversight on Donald's part that people waiting in line pointed out again and again: "Where are the porta-potties Donald!?"

The contestants entered through the gilded doors of the Trump Building twelve at a time, where they were ushered to a table headed by a member of the show's casting department. The group leader would expertly go around the table asking for an introduction from each contestant (not too long, mind you). All kinds of people showed up. High-powered Wall Streeters looking for an adventure sat cheek-to-jowl with people just out looking for any old job.

After introductions were made, the group leader would throw some sort of bone to generate a group conversation, something along the lines of "What makes a great leader?" Everyone knew that was the signal to start the fight to get to the top of the conversational heap. People quickly began tossing out their most-polished verbal nuggets, careful to take a position that would be distinct, but not offensive. "A leader has to be strong!" one would offer, followed up quickly by someone across the table who would fire back, "Oh, so you've got to be a man to be a leader? That's what you're saying aren't you?"

Not too many contestants were able to strike the right balance. But for the ones who did, a magical thing would happen. In one Orwellian stroke, a single person, perhaps a pair, would suddenly get called back to the table by an Apprentice staffer. A couple of whispers would be exchanged with the unsuspecting applicant before another staff member-amid the chaos of the milling applicants and the jostling media-whisked the chosen ones off behind a closed side door.

When they came out of the mystery room, as I began to think of it, I tried asking how it went, but the once garrulous applicants suddenly turned sheepish, saying "We're not supposed to talk to the press."

The whole process was really something to behold. I asked casting director Rob LaPlante how he had gotten so good at seeing through all the BS that gets thrown at him in one of these round-table sessions. "It's definitely a learned skill," he answered quickly as he gulped down another Trump Ice and waited for the next group of 12 to arrive. "I've cast 16 reality shows. That's how you learn how to do it."

Donald decided to put in one last appearance before going outside to work the crowd. He sat down at one of the casting tables, like he does in the boardroom on the show, with his sidekicks Carolyn and George on either side of him, and told the stunned, slack-jawed applicants, who surely weren't expecting to actually meet The Donald, that he knows they would all be great on the show.

"Some of you may get on," he said in his oft-imitated manner. "But for those of you who don't, well, you'll always have this to remember." Then, with a flash of the Donald smile, he was off, full press corps in tow.

So the race is on to find the next Sam, the next Omarosa, the next Troy or Kwame. The Apprentice 2 has scheduled open calls in 11 more cities from now through April 3. Then the contestants who make the cut go to Los Angeles for a full battery of medical and psychological exams before the final group gets selected. No doubt that leaves room for plenty more buzz to come.

This'll sound cheekier than it is: Omarosa.

I have a couple of people that applied after I bribed them. I would have, but no green card.

Finally! A reality show about business. It is addictive, but I wonder if it has any merit in business -- so much must happen behind the scenes that we don't see -- do you think Donald's pearls of wisdom on leadership and teamwork are universal or just best in the world of Trump?

When will there be a reality show about government?

Sat in a bar drinking beers with women who kept getting prettier as the evening wore on and watched the apprentice as a class assignment. I am already a winner.

The teams of women against men was interesting. I started watching since the fist episode not only for a class assignment for my own benefit also. I thought it was funny though when Trump told the women's team that they should use other tactics and not just selling their appeal when doing tasks. It's only getting interesting.

I have been watching the show as a class assignment and I am waiting to see what comes next for the contestants of the show. I believe Donald Trump is brilliant to have this type of reality show to provide the viewers with his values and beliefs. If he is using his seven rules as a guideline, then the contestants are there to prove their worth and business skills for the world to see. For reality shows this is tops in my view.

I ahve been watching the show as a class assignment and have found it very interesting. Donald Trumph is god, he always finds ways to succeed. This show is a brilliant way to get poeple's attention. I find it very interesting that he encorporated leadership, buisness and a reality show that all fit together. As time goes on I am excited to see what the outcome of Apprentice will be.

Anna Nicole Smith uses her breasts, Donald Trump uses his brains but what the addicted viewer uses is practically the same thing, a quick escape from their own humdrum life.

Did the Apprentice teach me anything and from Survivor before? Yes, that Mark Burnett is a genius and that Donald Trump knows a razor sharp business/media opportunity when he sees it. I am happy for Donald Trump but I don't really give a tick about who gets addicted or who gets fired, unless I want the show to teach me how to incorporate some sadistic qualities into my life.

I feel "The Apprentice" is a really good show to watch. Not only does it give you information on not what to do in the business world , but also what goes on in the real world of business. I have being watching this reality show every since it started, and it has giving me a lot of information.

Being a business student, The Apprentice has many different dynamic related to business courses that I am studying. Like Organizational Behavior, Leadership and Problem Solving, Negotiations, etc. I really enjoy the nature of people and the lengths they go to obtain a their goals. A lot of emphasis of their success at the beginning of the program but when thrown in 'lion's den', its a different story. Look forward to the last six challengers.

Hello all. I have been also watching "The Apprentice" and I have found that although it is a reality show, it gives some insight to what a billioniar does to keep his fortune and how he runs his business.

ApprenticeTwo.com another great Internet real estate strategy. I wonder who owns Apprentice3.com? Discovery is the journey:
It's Thursday! You know what that means... Throughout the day today my wife and I will be in touch with each other and our close friends discussing what might happen tonight on Survivor and The Apprentice. This level of Thursday anticipation (in our non-TIVO family room) can only be generated by fresh and innovative entertainment! Thanks Mr. Burnett.

I don't mind watching the Apprentice because it helps me in doing case analysis , It sharpens my problem solving skills.I think that there are a lot of mistakes that are made on the show that we should take lessons from and try to avoid in our lives.

As Donald reminded contestants in his cliché “think outside the box” it reminded me of what we are learning in class. Although this show is not necessarily depictive of the real business world, there are lessons to learned; leadership, teamwork, creative thinking, on the spot decision making, and of course bottom line profit margins. I feel a lot of the tactics used, especially by the woman who flaunted extensively in the beginning, wouldn’t fly in the real world, or like the show, not for very long. It must be difficult though, to go everyday into a new challenge, venturing off and leading into areas some are not familiar with, and tasks that are somewhat, unrealistic or well just plain silly. I have to give Donald credit for thinking outside of the box and entrapping America in his newest money making venture. What a great publicity stunt!

Mr. Trump I think that you were wrong in firing Angie. The reason why I say that is because Alex was setting her up for a down fall. He delegated all the responsibility to her and didn't delegate anything to himself and to Chris.
Like I said I think you were wrong.

Hello,

we just saw the first episode of The Apprentice 2 here in Finland. I have no clue who is going to winn... What I want to say, is that it is great fun to see how american competitors make fools of them selves. I can only say that one can be pretty disaponted about the level of this competition. I can only imagine the level it would have if they allowed competitors around the world. And what an edge would Trump have, when instead of local "know it all's" he would have an international plane and an change to select the world's best Apprentice!

capitalism rules...?

I have been watching the show sequally and ..... my mind was floating away.... wish I could be part of it but I realize something impossible for some one like me to be one of at least Trump's lowest staff. All I can say is Donald is a genuine business man, I bet lot of businessmen envy him without knowing what to do about him, lol. Maybe for them who wants to be like Donald has to have high gambling mind with steady and strong analysis, that's all. Life has only has 2 choices, is not it. "take it or leave it"... how steady you are to take it or leave it....Keep going Mr. Trump. Look forward to your other brilliant inovations....applied to the whole possible countries. GBU

I cannot believe you let Randall decide the fate of Rebecca on the final night. I trusted in my heart that you were going to hire both of them and that is what I feel you needed to do for yourself but you let Randall decide that. You gave that man to much power right out of the gate Mr. Trump. Rebecca deserved more than that. I really believed she should have won or been hired with Randall. I totally respect and admire you as a businessman and a person. I was pulling gor Rebecca the entire time for her quiet strenght and her obvious strengths. I am really disappointed in this decision of Randall's. I believe you would have made a different one. Don't lose your power and intuition Mr. Trump because that is what has gotten you where you need to be I believe.
Sincerely,

I FEEL U HAD ZERO CLASS IN EVEN MENTIONING THAT. IT PROVES ;;;EVEN U SOMETIMES NEED A REALITY CHECK. THANKS
