Whether people call her Pink or P!nk bothers me none. She may not be everybody's cup of tea, but P!nk I can drink given the right place and the right circumstance, mainly because in the world commercial pop, she sits at the gateway between those bands who play live in local clubs and the one's that play to supersized giant stadia, of course I don't claim to know her, I only know whatever it is I can thread together between the lyrics and the musical energy.
I don't know what or where the edge comes that goes into the mix of P!nk's lyrics and really it is none of business to find out why? What I do know is that whatever the "what" is, she applied to career as pop icon and the underlying story here is (if there is one to be dug up) is finding a good place for your creativity to live and be.
Maybe her songs cry out and touch those who cry out, but there is a certain kind of art in that music. Her ways might not sit right with those people who like telling others what doesn't sit right but it's instructive to me. Maybe if it only teaches me this one thing, which is to learn to get out of other people's faces and not assume I know who such and such is, but in minding my own business, be a free being of my own village and a builder of a good home.
A good home, is probably what a selection of tracks portend, whether it be "Please don't leave me"..."Family Portrait"...or just "Trouble". In focusing on what's wrong, what I take from P!nk's music is to focus on what's right. The thing is, you can never tell what right is until you have watched and listened to wrong. A tough life is a tough life no matter how you cut it, music IMHO is a way to put it all together and give rise to a new way of seeing.
As usual, this music is what I want to listen to or at least point me towards a union of creative spirit. If I can refer to P!nk's music as "art", then this where one should channel frustrated or angry energy i.e. art not vandalism, art not gangs. Yet, it is true also that the graffiti we see on walls is an expression of "art" as well. That art however point's to an absence of creative leadership, an lack of a wiser head in a community yearning to show off its gifts.
No point in being heavy about these things, they just are - so long as I remember whenever I am angry, frustrated or mad at the world - a little imagination, can go a long way...
