Your orthodontist can improve most tooth and jaw alignment problems at
any age. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that
children see an orthodontist no later than age seven.
Orthodontists diagnose, prevent and treat dental and facial
irregularities. The majority of members of the American Association of
Orthodontists (AAO) limit their practices to orthodontics and
dentofacial orthopedics. Orthodontists treat a wide variety of
malocclusions (improperly aligned teeth and/or jaws). They regularly
treat young children, teens and adults.
Dr Robert Chavez & Dr Andrew If
a person's teeth are not ready for a proper retainer, the orthodontist
may prescribe the use of a pre-finisher. This rubber appliance similar
to a mouth guard fixes gaps between the teeth, small spaces between the
upper and lower jaw, and other minor problems that could worsen. These
problems are small matters that dental braces cannot fix.
Veneers or Whitening?
Teeth whitening may provide a white smile for mildly discolored
teeth. Some people who are interested in veneers will find that their
cosmetic dentist will steer them to the simpler alternative of
whitening, perhaps combined with some simple orthodontic alignment. The
placement of dental veneers requires the “shaping” or “prepping” of all
teeth being fitted with the custom-designed shells. This process
permanently alters the teeth that are treated and is therefore not
recommended if your natural teeth are functionally and esthetically
adequate.
Dr Robert Chavez Arch Orthodontics If
the cosmetic dentist provides you with a diagnosis and treatment plan
during the consultation, it is important that he or she share that
information with you in detail. Make sure that you understand your
diagnosis and any viable treatment alternatives. Make sure that you
feel completely comfortable with the level of detail and thoroughness
of the explanations you are given so that you can make an educated
decision about your cosmetic dental treatment.
