In creating a new product or modifiying an existing one, the physical attributes, function/feature sets, and ID (Industrial Design) must be contained in one document, the Product Specification. The specs I write for wireless embedded appliances capture these specific requirements:
GENERAL DESCRIPTION is basically the product introduction paragraph. It explains the basic concept or appeal of the new or modified product.
PROBLEM DEFINITION provides a statement of concern and how the new or modified product will address as well as the innovation that will be used in resolving the concern.
FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS gets into how the new or modified product will work. Detail sketches usually accompany the text to help convey the new or modified product's operation.
MECHANICAL SPECIFICATION provides packaging and Industrial Design information for the new or modified product. Traditional 2D and, if available, 3D information suchs a dimensional data is provided within this specification area of the product document. Sometimes manufacturing processes may be explained in the MECHANICAL SPECIFICATION section of the product document.
RF SPECIFICATIONS explains the radio frequency information of the new or modified wireless product. Operating frequency, range, and antenna length data is listed in this section. Types of wireless circuits and key components are also explained in the RF SPECIFICATIONS section as well.
REGULATORY SPECIFICATIONS provides important information on Federal Goverment Agency requirements that the new or modified product must meet. FCC and UL requirements must be met before any wireless embedded appliances can be sold off of retailer's shelves.
ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIFICATIONS discusses parameters such as Temperature testing and normal operating temperature ranges for the new or modified product. Relative Humidity (RH) parameters are also provided in this section as well.
BOILER PLATE SPECFICATIONS are generally internal processes or testing documents that are disclosed to Manufacturing Vendor by Inventor, or Tech Entrepreneur within the main specification.
With the Product Specification the task of building production intent units capturing the Inventor or Tech Entrepreneur's idea for a modified or new product. Brainstorming events may be used in soliciting ideas that can be turned into relevant data for the Product Specification.
