is the loss of tooth structure from flexural forces. As
teeth flex under pressure, the arrangement of teeth touching each
other, known as occlusion, causes tension on one side of the tooth and
compression on the other side of the tooth. This is believed to cause
V-shaped depressions on the side under tension and C-shaped depressions
on the side under compression. When tooth destruction occurs at the
roots of teeth, the process is referred to as internal resorption, when
caused by cells within the pulp, or external resorption, when caused by
cells in the periodontal ligament.
Dr Norheim The Edwin Smith Papyrus, written in the 17th century BC but which may
reflect previous manuscripts from as early as 3000 BC, includes the
treatment of several dental ailments. In the 18th century BC, the Code
of Hammurabi referenced dental extraction twice as it related to
punishment. Examination of the remains of some ancient Egyptians and
Greco-Romans reveals early attempts at dental prosthetics and surgery.
Dr Dennis J Norheim DDS Dentin is the substance between enamel
or cementum and the pulp chamber. It is secreted by the odontoblasts of
the dental pulp. The formation of dentin is known as dentinogenesis.
The porous, yellow-hued material is made up of 70% inorganic materials,
20% organic materials, and 10% water by weight. Because it is softer
than enamel, it decays more rapidly and is subject to severe cavities
if not properly treated, but dentin still acts as a protective layer
and supports the crown of the tooth.
