According to the estimable Matt Drudge, rocker Fred Durst, of Limp Bizkit fame (although increasingly famous merely for being famous), has had his phone hacked by the same person who hacked Paris Hilton's phone earlier this week. The self-described T-Mobile Terrorist seems to have a thing for giving overexposed no-talents their comeuppance. Tara Reid, cancel your wireless service before it's too late!
But seriously, folks, the advent of phone hacking should be putting a chill into our collective spine. It certainly reflects the focal point shift in our technological universe from the PC to the phone. And if the phone's going to be the center of our universe, it's going to come in for added scrutiny from hackers and spammers of all stripes.
The phone companies and the wireless companies certainly have a responsibility to do whatever they can and at a minimum that's seeding development of anti-whatever protection for your phone. If it comes to having to buy antivirus, firewall, anti-spam, anti-spyware, etc. for our phones as well as our PCs, it's depressing, but so be it.
Even if you're not a D-list celebrity, do you worry about your phone's security? What do you do? What can you do?

I think it is important to note that the phones themselves aren't being hacked, but rather the tmo servers. The sidekick backs the data up to the tmo servers, which are aparently insecure.
people would do well to be more concerned with the inadequate security and privacy concerns of automatically uploaded data and less concerned with hackers invading their phones

Don't understand why hackers hack, but it's good to see people like Durst and Hilton get screwed.

Found a mirror up: Fred Durst and her girlfriend video.
They found the name of the girl, too.

According to The Grudge Report and other sources, both "hacks" are believed to be a result of "social engineering". For the non-initiated, "social engineering" is another term for a con job. It was a very popular method amoung hackers and phreaks back in the 80s and from the looks of things, seems to have come back en vogue in the new millenium. Social engineers will do everything from con information out of the person being hacked, thier friends, family and other associates, a company providing service, or even just dumpster diving for information thrown away in the trash by the intended victim. Social engineering requires no real computer technical skills, even though back in the day, quite a few of the best "engineers" had technical savvy out the wazoo. The best defense is simply chose good passwords for all your passworded stuff, change them all once a month, and do not give out to people you cannot trust or people who can't keep a secret.

Considering that a PDA/smartphone is one of those things that's small, expensive and designed to be easily lost, it's a good idea to give it as strong a password as anything else you do. Unless you like strangers (or girlfriends) combing through your personal data.
Combining two or more pieces of unrelated personal information makes things both trickier for hackers to guess and easier for to you remember (making a "meme" - same trick card counters and magicians use for remembering tons of useless data). Eg:
- favourite colour PLUS your home phone number
- favourite holiday city PLUS your birth year
- pet's name PLUS girlfriend's birthday
Does anyone know what Paris's password was? I'm betting on "love", "password", or "secret"...
And anyone who uses those - prepare for a visit from your IT department, soon. We know where your cube is.

Paris's password is probably "ThatsHot". She's trying to have it trademarked.

For some reason, I feel absolutely no sympathy for Paris Hilton having her phone hacked. She probably left it somewhere on purpose just for the publicity. I bet she left a couple of shots of her in a bikini on the phone, too, just hoping they would be posted online.
