Flat-Pak Cardboard Furniture: Coming to a Doomed Start-Up Near You

Cardboard: The little commodity that could. Twenty years ago, Frank Gehry turned cardboard into a classic furniture series; twenty years later, one ad firm built its entire office out of the stuff. And here's a new design: Flat-pack cardboard furniture, which can be assembled into handy workstations, accent tables, and storage nooks:

Compared to the Gehry furniture, or even the Beeboard desk which used to be sold at Design Within Reach, this line by Pedro Gomes is greener because it packs into a skinny envelope. That means carbon savings through lowered transport costs

Gomes, however, is not alone in his idea: Magis recently introduced a carboard playhouse for kids, which the tykes can assemble themselves:

That's pretty awesome, but what's with the "Doomed Startup" headline?

Ha--Thanks for commenting Josh. What mean and my editor were wondering: Has cardboard begun teetering on parody? And if so, wouldn't the first fashion victims, so to speak, would be startups. Witness all the Aeron chairs that went up on Craigslist, circa 2002.

Interesting stuff, well for startups not a bad idea at all for a beginning! And this is highly customizable without much effort... :)

Card board furniture or for that matter furniture made from press wood has never appealed to me. I think proper furniture made from proper wood will only be long lasting. For those who keep changing the homes, have a transferable job or would like to change their furniture frequently this could be an expensive proposition hence Cardboard furniture might be suitable.

Such kind of cardboard furniture can be really fun to make and put in the corner to make use of the available space. But if you are looking for office computer furniture then you would do well to pick computer ergonomics furniture that helps you work and function better in the office work time.
