The Puck Stops Here

Yesterday, Wayne Gretzky was named head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes. Gretzky also serves as managing partner and alternate governor for the Coyotes.

Even though the Fast Company CDU tried to debunk the one Wayne Gretzky quote that's most often used in business back in July 2000, there may be more lessons now to be learned from the Great One...

When in P.R. trouble, trot out the old glitter - As the NHL recovers (maybe) from the lockout, Gretzky back in the active part of the NHL may help revive fans memories of the "good 'ol days".
Corporate "nepotism" is not always a good idea - Gretzky is a managing partner and alternate governor for the Coyotes. Wonder what questions he asked when he interviewed himself?
Great stars don't always make good managers - He's undoubtedly the greatest hockey player we'll ever see...that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be the greatest hockey coach ever. Actually, it runs contrary to the normal..."Those who can't, teach." (or coach...uh...or consult)

Other lessons?

Or broadcast. Sometimes you have to skate to where the job is and not to where you think it's going to be!

As someone in Phoenix, who has been a hockey fan since he was five, going to Olympia and Joe Louis Arena to watch the Red Wings, I have to give Gretzky credit on one thing.

He hired great assistant coaches. And, that's what is going to help him more than anything else.

Now, is that going to get me down to the games? Probably not.
