It was announced today that one of the world's top three spammers (now there's a list you want to be on... and can't opt-out) has been ordered to pay a $7 million settlement to Microsoft. Good Thing. Bill could use the money.
I continuously preach on my blog and in my keynotes about the wonders of one-to-one marketing via e-mail. The main reason that e-marketing's growth has been stunted is because of spam and phishing. (In addition to legit marketers not knowing what they're doing) Do you think major payouts like this will help the cause?

These payouts will not stop Spam. Spam will only stop when it is no longer economical to send millions of emails for microscopic returns. The dismal returns being seen by legitimate e-marketers are due to their very close proximity to Spam, and consumers' difficulty differentiating an unsolicited Viagra email from an interruptive, irrelevant, permission-based email from a company. Until e-marketers empower consumers to participate in conversations with them, they will be seen as Spammers by consumers, which is more punitive than being a Spammer in legal terms.
