Cambridge Who’s Who would
like to draw your attention to the New Image Emergency Shelter, a set of
programs focused on helping low income homeless individuals and families.
Cambridge lifetime member Brenda Wilson, along with her twin sister Lynda
Moran, established New Image in 1989 to reduce and prevent homelessness throughout
Los Angeles County by providing housing, thorough case management, job
placement, and outreach and referral services. The following year, New Image
was incorporated.
December 2008 was a milestone for the organization,
which, by that time had provided case management and supportive services to
more than 1.9 million (duplicated) homeless and low-income individuals and
families with children, of which over 701,336 of these clients were
unduplicated (they were seen only once). In its 20 year existence, New Image
has managed more than 40 federal, county, city and local programs, channeling $39,444,000.00
in public funds to the benevolent cause. Currently, 413 programs comprise the
shelter’s range of operations, presided over by 184 employees.
New Image houses a Year-Round Shelter Program that provides
evening shelter for 500+ homeless nightly and services such as a shower room,
laundry room, childcare, message and mail services, clothing, a medical prevention
health clinic and a computer learning center. New Image Transitional Housing
Programs provide job, education and practical life skills assistance and helps homeless
families with children. The program lasts for 6 to 9 months and prepares
participants in the program for placement in permanent housing or ownership.
Additionally there is Project Fresh Start, a transitional program for homeless
single women that prepares them for placement in permanent housing.
The Year-Round shelter has had to reduce its number of
beds due to a funds shortage. To find out how you can help New Image maintain
this program you can call (562) 983-7289 to speak directly with Cambridge
member Brenda Wilson at the corporate office, make a financial donation on The New Image Emergency Shelter Website or send a check payable to “New
