There are loads of solar-powered iPhone and iPod Touch chargers--the Solio Solar Charger, Solar Arcadia iPhone Solar Charger, and the SOLiCharger, to name a few--but until today, Apple stayed mum on the topic. Now the computing behemoth has given the thumbs up to Novothink's Solar Surge charger, scheduled to be released for the 2G iPod Touch at the end of September and the iPhone later this year.
The $70 device can produce 30 to 60 minutes of talk time on 2 hours of pure sun power thanks to a lithium ion battery that has 120% of the capacity of the iPhone 3G. Just in case you're in a cloudy area, the charger also comes with a USB cable. And if you're unsure about how much sunbathing the Solar Surge requires for your needs the Novothink Web site provides a handy Solar Planner, which analyzes charging time necessary based on the weather and phone usage.
Apple presumably chose to endorse the Solar Surge because it's more compact and sleek than most other similarly-priced chargers on the market. It's a fun gadget to show off, but probably is more useful for iPod Touch owners than iPhone-ers. Plenty of people spend time listening to their iPods while running or walking, but there are few reasons to leave an iPhone sitting on the grass. The real test for the Solar Surge will be its weight--if it's too unwieldy, it won't be practical for everyday use.

Sounds fantastic, but who holds a phone on the edges when using it? If i am on the phone, the part with the solar panel would be covered with my hands. I personally would not want a 1 hour conversation without being able to hold my phone comfortably, just so it charges and stops from turning it off?
I don't mean to be a party pooper, i guess it is good that all this energy saving bits are being released - after all, we will never run out of sun! But i think there is a lot to learn, and we are only just making our first steps to helping the environment and saving energy.

I think it is also pretty ineffective. I mean you would have to have a great deal of time on your hands to make even a little bit worht it.

@Claire Jennings: This is a charger, not a case. So, you slip your iPhone into this when the battery is running low. That would extend the iPhone battery an extra 120%.
I agree that it's pretty ugly (hope it comes in other colors). Presumably, it just requires light, not sunlight. This could be a great charging option for your office or home, not just outside.

@Nathen Westfield: Solar cells don't only work off of sunlight. Do you have any solar device (like a solar-powered calculator) that ONLY works outside? Presumably, you don't work in the dark.

Looks like Novothink is setting a new standard in solar chargers and with apple endorsing it, this new age of mobile chargers will set the stage for all other manufacturers to follow. Compared to other solar powered battery chargers, this charger is reasonably priced and and very practical.
