Adam Gilman, a nearly 40-year resident of Boone, N.C., and an avid traveler, musician and family man, has led a colorful life.
Adam Gilman, the son of Greek immigrants, was born and raised in Worcester, Mass. He took his first job at the age of 14 when he began working in his father’s restaurant.
Music played a big role in Adam Gilman’s life from an early age. His father and two brothers played guitar, mandolin and banjo, a friend played trumpet, and Adam Gilman accompanied them all on the piano. On Sunday afternoons, the impromptu band would often play music together.
Religion was also important for Adam Gilman, as his family was quite involved in the Greek Orthodox Church. In high school, Adam Gilman kept busy as a member of the marching band, senior choir and the Latin club.
Adam Gilman graduated from Harvard College in 1957 with a B.A. in mathematics. During his time at Harvard, Adam Gilman remained involved in musical activities (albeit on a higher scale). He and his roommate operated the campus carillon. Every morning they would make the long climb up the tower to wake the campus. Adam Gilman was also active in Harvard’s Classical Club and a Christian Fellowship group.
In 1957, Adam Gilman took a job at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His position was in the computing section of the Aeroelastic and Structures Research Lab in the Aeronautical Department.
During his time at M.I.T., Adam Gilman had the opportunity to program some of the earliest computers: LGP-30 made by Royal McBee, IBM 1130, IBM 709, IBM 7090 and the IBM 7094. At that time, programmers were a rare breed indeed.
Adam Gilman’s first publication for M.I.T. was classified and although he was the author, when he left the lab he was not able to take a copy with him. His second publication, funded by N.A.S.A., was entitled “A Fortran Computer Code For Future Generations.”
It was at M.I.T. that Adam Gilman met Kate Lapidus, whom he considered to be “the most beautiful and nicest engineer in the lab.” Kate was an artistic and creative woman who also loved mountain climbing, whitewater canoeing and rock climbing. Adam and Kate were married in 1966. For their honeymoon, the couple enjoyed a ten-week tour of Europe.
Through the years, Adam Gilman and his wife have been blessed with two wonderful children: a son, Locke, born in 1968; and a daughter, Erin, born in 1971.
Adam Gilman and his family have lived in Boone, N.C., since 1975. In their free time, they have enjoyed traveling through England, Scotland, Wales and other parts of Europe, including Greece.
