This past Monday Microsoft ditched virtualization limits on its higher end Vista operating system. Is it a bane or boon for VMware – whose sole business model revolves around virtualization?

The effect of Microsoft ditching virtualization limits will not have any effect on VMWare because their product offers features not found in the virtualization software for Vista. VMWare allows snapshots, and I have even been on interviews where the IT staffer assesses my knowledge by botching up a Windows virtual machine and having me get it online and connected to the Internet. VMWare records every click and movement for later review.

While the free price tag may move some, in production environments, features such as cloning of VMs and snapshots just in case an errant command takes down the VM are too essential. By omitting or not including those features, VPC 2007 still lacks behind VMWare and ultimately is a tool for the casual virtual machine user.
