Acquisitions and Merger Trends in Internet Media

| posted by Outervillage Outervillage

Amy Webb (not sure if that is actually her real name :) has posted and interesting illustration showing recent mergers and acquisitions
and how they've shaped the Web landscape over the last few years. The
diagram shows who owns what among some of the big Internet media types
like Google, Yahoo!, AOL, Microsoft, IAC, and News Corp.

It's interesting to see what these guys have bought over the last 4
or 5 years in terms of looking at what trends they think are worth
pursuing. The big trend over the last year seems to be ad related
companies. All of the big guys bought into companies like DoubleClick
(Google), Right Media (Yahoo!), AdECM and AQuantatative (Microsoft),
and Quigo (AOL).

Some other trends seem to be heavily geared towards social network
sites including blogs. Purchases like MyBlogLog.com, Blo.gs, Kennet
Works (Yahoo!), Feedburner (Google), Photobucket (News Corp), and
Match.com (IAC).

I think in 2008 you'll see these names start to pick up more mobile
advertising platforms to augment the ads push. Also look for more
consolidation in social networking sites. Take a look at my top 5 strategic technologies for 2008>
