The Pope is a not only the head of the Catholic Church he is also the head of City-State that is part of the international community. The Vatican has embassies and a diplomatic corps that interacts with other nations. As such, he is as much a political figure as a religous one.
There has been no time in human history when religion and politics have not been entwined. Our moral and ethical structures and strictures have been based on some form of religious myth or story. It could range from animism through to humanism or neo-consevativism. Always some form story has been used to persuade us that there is a utopia to work towards. Political leaders have their lives meshed in religious dogma and Religious leaders dabble in politics. How do we as the public control them?
Mr. Ratzinger - and Mr. Woytila before him and the all the other heads of the vatican in the 1600 years before - are just politicians, they have nothing to do with any god whatsoever - prove me wrong - so it is fairly obvious that they interfere and poke their old nose in whichever political issue in any country in the world they want. To pretend they would do the opposite would be naive, to say the least. The vatican is just about power and greed and mind control of naive people. Just to mention one fact: The vatican - or the so called jesuits if you prefer - own and manage a huge astronomical observatory on Mount Graham in Arizona. Its cost has been $30 mln and they got all the authorizations from the US gov't. Please do not believe me. Check the information yourselves. And this is nothing. the 0.001% of the tip of the iceberg. The whole picture is mind blowing. But I prefer to keep it confidential. Happy Sunday.
Vatican City, officially State of the Vatican City is a landlocked sovereign city-state. Vatican City is a non-hereditary, elected monarchy. A very old Monarchy. Tom Tancredo and Greg Palusa need to educate themselves. My suggestion Greg, is to simmer down and look up Vatican City on Wikipedia. You both come acress as ranting bone heads... unworthy of recognition.
Absolute separation of church and state (religion and politics) is very much an American mindset and one that has been around for less than 100 years. Too bad those who believe that the church should have nothing to do with politics don’t believe politics should have nothing to do with trying to control/restrict religion.
Politics decides how we live in this life and religion decides how we live in the next – both are relevant topics and can’t help but be intertwined
Greg – proof you are wrong: The Pope prays. Prayer has to do with God. The Pope has prayed publicly for years. Where is your proof that he has “nothing” to do God? My problem with atheists/agnostics is the same problem I have with Democrats – you regurgitate what has been spoon-fed to you and you have no idea how to draw your own conclusion or to think about the subject critically and draw rational conclusions to support your stance.
Pope Politics;
In Africa he advised NOT to use condoms but use abstinence because condoms are unsafe. Need I say more? In about 20 years time a Pope will buy a ticket to Africa to make more excuses.
