Dodge Caliber MI owners should know no deaths, no reported injuries, no property damage or accidents — as of yet—but a few customer complaints were all that was needed to launch The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s latest investigation into another possible sticky gas pedal situation, this time involving the 2007 Dodge Caliber.
As few as five customers have complained about a sticking accelerator pedal in their 2007 Dodge Caliber, but with the severe impact of Toyota’s recent recalls, it’s easy to see why the NHTSA has acted so quickly in its inquiry. Though it’s been estimated 161,000 vehicles are included in the investigation, a statement released by Chrysler does not indicate the number of Dodge Caliber MI vehicles affected, only that the issue is “limited to a small group of vehicles built during a five week window in March and April of 2006.” The statement also asserts it’s “a supplier manufacturing concern, which is mechanical in nature and not a design or electronic issue.”
Both The New York Times and Automotive News report the parts supplier as CTS Corp., of Elkhart, Ind., the same company who manufactured the accelerator pedals involved in Toyota’s massive two-million-plus vehicle recall. But according to an article in The Detroit News, “NHTSA said the Chrysler pedals are a completely different configuration than the recalled Toyota pedals.”
Dodge Caliber MI drivers are aware that the Dodge Caliber does have a brake override system which Chrysler said will help drivers stop the car should a “disagreement occur between the throttle and the brake.”
No recall has been announced yet, but Chrysler said it will cooperate fully with the investigation, and is providing free gas pedal inspections for customers whose Dodge Caliber vehicles fall within the five-week manufacturing window. Concerned customers can also call their local dealer or call Chrysler Customer Care at 1-800-992-1997 for more information.
