When selecting a keyphrase for your law firm, Google offers a quick popularity tool in their search bar. It is an easy way to do quick keyword popularity test without using Adwords.

A good keyphrase is made up of terms frequently used by online searchers… most particularly, your target market.

Something fun to do that is also very effective is using Google’s recommended search feature which is built into the search bar. For example, if you go to the Google home page and start typing “how many times” you will see three recommended searches of:

“How many times has it snowed in Florida?”
“How many times can I break before I shatter lyrics?”
“How many times is love mentioned in the Bible?”

These results are based on popular search terms. Typing in “face” will give you a direct link to Facebook.com, typing in “T” will instantly recommend “Target” and so on.

Now, let’s do something more relevant. Are more people searching for your practice area using “lawyer” or “attorney”? If you are a divorce lawyer in Boston, type in “Boston Divorce.”

Here is what gets recommended:

“Boston divorce records”
“Boston divorce lawyers”
“Boston divorce court”
“Boston divorce attorney”
“Boston divorce mediation”

And a few more. Based on this line up, “Boston divorce lawyers” should be more popular than “Boston divorce attorney.” As it turns out, it is.

According to Google’s Keyword Tool, “Boston divorce lawyers” gets 1,600 monthly searches whereas “Boston divorce attorney” gets 1,300 monthly searches.

The recommended search function in the Google search bar is a quick way to see what the world is search for and offers a little insight into your search engine optimization efforts.
