Whether you are a seasoned motorcycle enthusiast
looking for that next bike, or a prospective rider considering the many
options available to you, it is extremely important to remember what
matters most, your safety. With that said, One Stop Motors has provided a short list of what gear to have and why you need it.
More than ever, motorcycle gear is designed with both style and
safety in mind. Proper clothing can not only protect you in a crash,
it can actually improve your focus and help to reduce the fatigue that
naturally comes with riding motorcycles.
You owe it to yourself and to those who care about you to not make
excuses about using the right gear. Options are available for all
weather conditions, body types and budgets- none of these are excuses
to avoid wearing the appropriate gear.
Helmet
By using a full face, DOT approved helmet, you can protect yourself
from potential hazards such as being struck by debris, rain, dirt,
insects and objects thrown from other vehicles. Adding ear plugs for added protection can help prevent hearing loss suffered by many riders.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates
helmets improve your odds by 37 percent. That is, for every 100 riders
killed not wearing one, 37 riders could have lived had they all been
wearing helmets.
Jackets and Pants
Well-designed rider clothing keeps you protected from windburn,
sunburn, exhaust burns, and is a comfortable first line of defense.
Some riders wear a motorcycle jacket, but complete the outfit with
street pants. Fact is, your legs are very vulnerable so why not protect
them just as well?
In a crash, cotton dungarees tear through in less than one second.
Shorts, khakis or sweat pants offer negligible safety value. Fashion
leather may shred as instantly as cloth. If you choose leather, make
sure it’s suitable for motorcycle use.
“Whatever you wear, make sure it’s protective”, said Allan Gill, an experienced rider and OSM spokesman.
“Living in Las Vegas, I have seen many crashes that involved riders
wearing shorts and a tank top on a hot summer day. Last time I checked
your body was never designed for that, it doesn’t make for a pretty
site.”
Although buying motorcycle gear can have a substantial cost to it, the benefits, both long and short term, definitely warrant buying the best possible gear.
“Do you know what 20 mph can do to your skin,” Mr. Gill asked, “Oh my God, it can take it to the bone.”
This may sound dramatic, but he’s not kidding.
Boots and Gloves
The hands and feet are delicate parts of the body that can be
damaged easily in even the most minor accidents or collisions. As they
are packed with small bones and tendons, it is essential to protect
them at all time. Boots should be heavy-duty leather with hard armor
around the ankle, and ideally padded too. Leather gloves with long
gauntlets should likewise have impact protection on the knuckles and
palms, and even wrists.
