A little background for thus who can’t read my mind.
A few weeks or months back an Apple engineer took a prototype Iphone to a bar and left it. Someone picked it up and sold it to Jason Chen a “Journalist” that writes reviews on technology items.
It appears that the police have executed a search warrant at Chen’s home, to look for evidence of a crime. The journalist and posters at ZDnet website is claiming protection under freedom of the press since he is a “Journalist”. (To be clear, I do not know of any connection between Jason Chen and ZDNet.)
Journalists are not protected against breaking the law. They do not have a get out of jail free card just because they post an opinion piece on a website. Why is it okay for Chen to purchase property from an individual that he knows is not the proper owner and not suffer from prosecution? Not only did he purchase the item he bragged about it on the internet . . .”HEY LOOK AT ME. I BOUGHT STOLEN PROPERTY!!!!! BUT IT IS OKAY BECAUSE I CAN WRITE AN OPINION AND POST IT TO THE INTERNET!!!” How is that protected?
I suppose writing this opinion and posting it allows me the same freedom to break laws? I don’t think so!
