About

JumpStation (released in December 1993) used a web robot to find web
pages and to build its index, and used a web form as the interface to
its query program. It was thus the first WWW resource-discovery tool to
combine the three essential features of a web search engine (crawling,
indexing, and searching) as described below. Because of the limited
resources available on the platform on which it ran, its indexing and
hence searching were limited to the titles and headings found in the web
pages the crawler encountered.

Some useful questions to ask an SEO include:

* Can you show me examples of your previous work and share some
success stories?

* Do you follow the Google Webmaster Guidelines?

* Do you offer any online marketing services or advice to
complement your organic search business?

* What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what
timeframe? How do you measure your success?

* What's your experience in my industry?

* What's your experience in my country/city?

* What's your experience developing international sites?

* What are your most important SEO techniques?

* How long have you been in business?

* How can I expect to communicate with you? Will you share with
me all the changes you make to my site, and provide detailed information
about your recommendations and the reasoning behind them?

Getting indexed

The leading search engines, such as Google and Yahoo!, use crawlers
to find pages for their algorithmic search results. Pages that are
linked from other search engine indexed pages do not need to be
submitted because they are found automatically. Some search engines,
notably Yahoo!, operate a paid submission service that guarantee
crawling for either a set fee or cost per click. Such programs usually
guarantee inclusion in the database, but do not guarantee specific
ranking within the search results. Two major directories, the Yahoo
Directory and the Open Directory Project both require manual submission
and human editorial review. Google offers Google Webmaster Tools, for
which an XML Sitemap feed can be created and submitted for free to
ensure that all pages are found, especially pages that aren't
discoverable by automatically following links.

Search engine crawlers may look at a number of different factors
when crawling a site. Not every page is indexed by the search engines.
Distance of pages from the root directory of a site may also be a factor
in whether or not pages get crawled.

Basics: HTML Title Tags

In HTML code, the title tag specifies the title of your Web page. It
is code which is inserted into the header of your web page and looks
like this:

The World Wide Web Consortium describes the title as a required
element in an HTML document:

The global structure of an HTML document - 7.4.2 The TITLE element

"Every HTML document must have a TITLE element in the HEAD section."

SEO Hierarchy of Needs

There's a hierarchy to be considered when developing any SEO
campaign. To help businesses and marketers apply this strategy of
prioritization, the SEO Hierarchy of Needs shows the relative place of
search engine optimization tasks.

Diverse File Formats

In order to correctly identify which bytes of a document
represent characters, the file format must be correctly handled. Search
engines which support multiple file formats must be able to correctly
open and access the document and be able to tokenize the characters of
the document.

Faulty Storage

The quality of the natural language data may not always be
perfect. An unspecified number of documents, particular on the Internet,
do not closely obey proper file protocol. binary characters may be
mistakenly encoded into various parts of a document. Without recognition
of these characters and appropriate handling, the index quality or
indexer performance could degrade.

Some crawlers may also avoid requesting any resources that have a "?" in
them (are dynamically produced) in order to avoid spider traps that may
cause the crawler to download an infinite number of URLs from a Web
site. This strategy is unreliable if the site uses URL rewriting to
simplify its URLs.

Path-ascending crawling

Some crawlers intend to download as many resources as possible from a
particular web site. So path-ascending crawler was introduced that
would ascend to every path in each URL that it intends to crawl. For
example, when given a seed URL of
http://llama.org/hamster/monkey/page.html , it will attempt to crawl
/hamster/monkey/, /hamster/, and /. Cothey found that a path-ascending
crawler was very effective in finding isolated resources, or resources
for which no inbound link would have been found in regular crawling.
