During my secondary school years, the only essays I wrote were simple book reviews and other informal forms of essays, with only a few researches on sample essays and the likes every now and then. In short, I was not very skillful at essay writing.
When I went to university, however, I was in for a surprise. I’m an economics major, and I didn’t know that I would be writing essays for the most part of my university years. The first university essay I made was an economic brief. I can still recall it was supposed to be a two page essay on the economic outlook at the time – and I didn’t know how to start! That was when I realised that economics is not just about computing the GNP or the GDP and the inflation rate. It is more on analysing facts and putting them into words to present a well done paper that would explain how the different economic indicators interact and influence the overall state of the economy. From these forthright experiences, I can say that putting all the knowledge I gained in one academic essay has added much to the practicality of what I’m in university for.
