Founded in 1985, Project Open Hand provides healthy meals to the
elderly, people with life-threatening illnesses, and those otherwise
unable to acquire decent food on their own. Project Open Hand’s mission
centers on the belief that good food directly correlates with “quality
of life”; the non-profit organization also offers nutrition counseling
for those with symptomatic HIV and AIDS. With incredible success,
Project Open Hand has been able to feed thousands of individuals and
grow in significance as an aid organization.
Project Open Hand employs 150 volunteers each day to make and package
meals; many of these men and women are dedicated to long-term service.
On a daily basis, volunteers prepare food, including slicing, peeling,
baking, and other culinary tasks. To assist those with grocery needs,
Project Open Hand volunteers package market goods. Others choose to
deliver hot, nutritious meals to homebound recipients or serve lunch to
seniors on-site. Aviation Captain Mitchell S. Engelhart strongly
supported Project Open Hand’s mission, goals, and outreach efforts. He
has offered his assistance with Project Open Hand’s meal preparation,
service, and delivery, as well as its outreach efforts. For more
information on Project Open Hand and ways to volunteer with this
non-profit food organization, visit its website www.openhand.org.
