Why Do I Experience Pimples After Waxing?
A reader recently emailed me complaining of whiteheads developing every time she received a Brazilian wax. When one develops whiteheads after waxing, it means that somehow, bacteria were able to get into the open pores. This can happen during any waxing procedure, eyebrows, back, legs, bikini, etc.
In order to stop whiteheads from forming, you should cleanse the area to be waxed thoroughly before and after. Also, apply an alcohol based treatment to the waxed area after the procedure. If you are being waxed at a professional spa, let your esthetician know that you have sensitive skin and have been developing whiteheads after waxing. An alcohol based cleanser should always be applied after waxing regardless of a patient’s skin type to protect the vulnerable area from infection.
It is also important to keep the treated area clean for the next 24-48 hours. Use warm water and soap to cleanse the area, then apply an antibacterial treatment such as Aloe Vera or Neosporin ointment. This should minimize the breakout.
If you are experiencing severe breakouts after waxing, you may have a reoccurring bout of folliculitis. This is an infection of the hair follicle that may need to be treated with prescription medications. Many topical medications can be prescribed to clear up the infection or your doctor may advise the use of an oral antibiotic, depending on the severity of your infection.
